		Jacob le Maire was appointed principal merchant, and president of the ships; and Wilhelm Schouten, an able seamen, received the charge of patron or master mariner.
		The vessels fitted out were the Eendracht, ship of three hundred and sixty tons, nineteen guns, and sixty-five men, and a galliot, named the Horne, of one hundred and ten tons, eight guns and twenty-two men.
		The president, Le Maire, and Patron Schouten, sailed in the former the latter was commanded by Jan Schouten, brother to the patron, with Adrian Claesz as merchant.

		Jacob Le Maire (about 1585 to 1616) was a Dutch mariner, born in Antwerp, who circumnavigated the earth in 1615-16.
		In June 1615 Jacob le Maire and Willem Schouten sailed with two vessels, Eendracht and Hoorn, from Texel in the United Provinces, in command of an expedition whose objective was to evade the trade restrictions of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) by finding a new route to the Pacific and the Spice Islands.
		Le Maire and Schouten were arrested and the Eendracht was confiscated in Java.

		In the summer of 1617, Isaac Le Maire sued the VOC for the return of his property, including his son's journal, and got a government injunction to keep the results of the expedition secret in the hope that Le Maire Strait might be used exclusively by ships of his own Southern Company.
		The Southern Company soon folded and Le Maire faded into history, but the strait that bears his name became the preferred passage of navigators during the seventeenth century, a route that shortened the voyage from the south Atlantic to the Pacific from weeks to days.
