Lydia Corre- na, Vicomtesse Montmort, owned the farm Mariendal which had been given to her as a wedding present by her father, a brewer named Jacob Letterstedt.
She made large tract of land, adjacent to Newlands Station, available for renting or purchase.

Cape Town's only surviving water mill, the Josephine Mill in Newlands, has been restored as a working milling museum.
The mill, which has a cast-iron wheel, was built in 1849 by Swedish settler Jacob Letterstedt, who named it for Crown Princess Josephine of Sweden.
Mostert's Mill, situated on the corner of Rhodes Avenue and Rhodes Drive in Mowbray was probably built in 1796 (the date on one of the vanes) by Sybrandt Mostert on the farm Welgelegen.
