Jacob Rivers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jacob Rivers was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 12 March 1915, at Neuve Chapelle, France, Private Rivers, on his own initiative, crept to within a few yards of a very large number of the enemy who were massed on the flank of an advanced company of his battalion, and hurled bombs on them.
Private Rivers performed a second similar act of great bravery on the same day, again causing the enemy to withdraw.

This is the story of Jacob's ladder to heaven, which appears to him in a dream as he is fleeing from his home to avoid the wrath of his brother, Esau.
Jacob has stolen his brother's rightful blessing from his father, Isaac, and so his mother, Rebecca, sends him away to her brother Laban's home in Haran near the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
Jacob named the place where he had his dream "Bethel," which means "the house of God," and many Christians think of "Jacob's ladder" as carrying them from earth to heaven after they die, so they can be with Jesus in God's heavenly home.
