Jacob Whitmer died in Richmond, April 21, 1856, aged 56 years 2 months and 26 days, John Whitmer died in Far West, Caldwell Co., Mo., in 1878; and Hiram Page died on a farm about fourteen miles west of Richmond, near the boundary line of Clay County, Missouri, August 12, 1852.
My father, Jacob Whitmer, was always faithful and true to his testimony to the Book of Mormon, and confirmed it on his death bed.
Bisbee, a daughter of the late Jacob Whitmer, and Philander Page, a son of the late Hiram Page, and from them and documents in their possession we gained information in regard of the Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon.

John and Sarah Whitmer's surviving daughter [Sarah Elizabeth (Whitmer) Johnson] was born in her father's hotel, just south of the Public Square.
Whitmer remained at Far West and has since been a highly respected and law abiding citizen.” He was buried locally, in the Kingston Cemetery, Kingston, Missouri.
During the 1880s, their son Jacob D. Whitmer was noted for having one of the best farms in that part of the country, including the Temple Block, which he had inherited from his father.

It is recorded in the American Cyclopedia and the Encyclopedia Britannica, that I, David Whitmer, have denied my testimony as one of the three witnesses to the divinity of the Book of Mormon; and that the other two witnesses, Oliver Cowdery and Martin Harris, denied their testimony to that Book.
Jacob Whitmer and John Whitmer were also present when Hiram Page and Oliver Cowdery returned from Canada.
Well, we were all in great trouble; and we asked Joseph how it was that he had received a revelation from the Lord for some brethren to go to Toronto and sell the copyright, and the brethren had utterly failed in their undertaking.

The whole Whitmer family had become interested in the translating of the Book of Mormon, and it was at the residence of this family that Joseph Smith lived until he completed the work of translating the Book of Mormon from the gold plates.
Others in the Whitmer family are numbered among the eight witnesses, but David alone had the privilege of being among the select three witnesses.
Whitmer said that although it is recorded that he had denied his testimony as one of the three witnesses, neither he nor the other two had at any time denied that testimony or any part thereof.

This is contradicted, however, by statements like that of David Whitmer in the Saints Herald in 1882, "these hands handled the plates, these eyes saw the angel." But Z. Gurley elicited from Whitmer a not so positive response to the question,"did you touch them?" His answer was, "We did not touch nor handle the plates.".
Whitmer, "and I know that the story sensationally circulated, and which is now on the records of the Utah Mormons as an actual happening, was nothing but a trumped up yarn.

In March of 1838, John Whitmer wrote in his personal history of several people (including himself) whose membership in the Church had been recently terminated.
David Whitmer and Oliver Cowdery (married to Elizabeth Ann Whitmer) were privileged to view the sacred plates near the family home and sign their names as two of the Three Witnesses.
Included in her memoirs are stories of the early Whitmer family and memories of a Far West still dotted at that time with homes, a store, and even a school.

Alexander Doniphan, counsel to the prisoners, said concerning the court of inquiry: “If a cohort of angels were to come down and declare we were innocent, it would all be the same; for he (King) had determined from the beginning to cast us into prison” (HC 3:213).
It is very likely that David Whitmer came to this office to ask General Doniphan to sign a petition in support of David’s honest character amidst false rumors that he had retracted his testimony as a witness of the Book of Mormon.
Jacob Whitmer, the son of Peter Whitmer Sr., is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, along with Oliver Cowdery, who was buried in an unmarked grave.

Martin Harris and Oliver Cowdery returned to the Church after years of disaffection, but even when they were outside the organization, they boldly declared the validity of the statement published over their names in the Book of Mormon.
David Whitmer never came back into the organization, but repeatedly he took the same stand as his associates had taken, and shortly before his death he published a pamphlet denying statements made in the Encyclopedia Americana and the Encyclopedia Britannica to the effect that the witnesses had repudiated their testimony.

You say I make a number of mistakes here, for the history of the church, written in September, 1844, says that W. Phelps, Oliver Cowdery and John Whitmer were the persons who arranged these revelations.
John Whitmer's "Church History"--Chapters XIX-XXII, by John Whitmer: John Whitmer, witnesses to the Book of Mormon's divinity, was called by revelation in 1831 to keep a history of the church.
Whitmer obeyed this calling until the end of 1837.
