Jacob Zeilin (16 July 1806 - 18 November 1880) was a U.S. Marine Corps general.
In 1847, Zeilin served as military commandant at San Diego and, in September, served with the forces that captured Guaymas and those that met the enemy at San Jose on the 30th.
In 1864, Zeilin assumed command of the Marine Barracks at Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Brigadier General Jacob Zeilin, seventh Commandant of the Marine Corps, was born 16 July 1806 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He was the second person to set foot on shore at the formal landing of the naval forces at Yokohama, Japan, on 14 July 1853, and was one of those later accorded special honor for his part in the expedition that opened the doors of Japan to the outside world.
In 1863, Maj Zeilin was given command of the battalion of Marines sent to support the naval force whose mission was the capture of Charleston, South Carolina, but, because of illness, he returned after a few weeks of this duty to garrison duty at Marine Barracks, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

He entered the marine corps and was commissioned a 2d lieutenant, 1 October, 1831, promoted to 1st lieutenant, 12 September, 1836, and cruised in the "Columbus" and "Congress" in 1845-'8 during the Mexican war.
In March, 1864, he returned to the north and took command of the marine barracks at Portsmouth, New Hampshire He was appointed colonel commandant of the marine corps, 10 June, 1864, and assumed control at headquarters at Washington, D. Because it was impossible to recite all the achievements of the Marines on the Corps color, said the King, "the great globe itself" was to be their emblem, for Marines had won honor everywhere.
The eagle, which is a Golden Eagle, and fouled anchor, which means the anchor has a cable attached on the emblem, were added to leave no doubt that the Corps was both American and maritime.

For those of you who might not know, the first recorded instance of this Marine Band serenade was on 1 January 1865, the last New Year's day of the Civil War.
Colonel Commandant Jacob Zeilin had been promoted to the commandancy the previous summer, after the death of Colonel John Harris.
The band leader at the time, Francis Scala, was noted for leading the band with a clarinet instead of a baton.

Before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Army allowed the Marines to emplace two gun batteries in northwest Fort Rosecrans for training purposes:
Battery Gillespie, three 5-inch navy guns, and Battery Zeilin, two 7-inch navy guns.
Both batteries were named for Marine Corps officers who took part in the American conquest of California: Lt. Archibald H. Gillespie, who came to Kearny's assistance following the Battle of San Pasqual, and Lt. Jacob Zeilin who later became commandant of the Corps.
