IEEE - IEEE History Center: Jacob Ziv Abstract
Jacob Ziv is best known for developing the Lempel-Ziv algorithm for data compression with his colleague, Abraham Lempel.
Ziv then discusses MIT’s program in information theory during the time he was a student there, and the important intellectual influences at MIT (particularly Claude Shannon) that shaped his thinking.
Jacob bothered at the time by theory’s assumption of an a-priori knowledge of data being transmitted.

The algorithm is derived from the (additional info and facts about LZ77) LZ77 algorithm presented by Abraham Lempel and Jacob Ziv in a paper entitled "A Universal Algorithm for Sequential Data Compression" in the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, May 1977.
LZ78 was covered by by Lempel, Ziv, Cohn, and Eastman, assigned to (additional info and facts about Sperry Corporation) Sperry Corporation, later (additional info and facts about Unisys Corporation) Unisys Corporation, filed on August 10, 1981, and presumably now expired.
Although the LZW (A word formed from the initial letters of a multi-word name) acronym obviously refers to the inventors as Lempel, Ziv and Welch, some people claim the intellectual property rights go to Ziv first, so the method must be called the Ziv-Lempel-Welch algorithm, and not the Lempel-Ziv-Welch algorithm.

Professor Jacob Ziv of TECHNION Haifa, Israel, is receiving the Eduard Rhein Prize for several groundbreaking publications on the theories of information and communication technologies.
A coding procedure offered by Jacob Ziv (who developed the concept and provided the theoretical basis) and Abraham Lempel (who developed the programming algorithm) solves this problem in a very elegant way.
As Ziv was able to show in the 1970s, for uniform texts it astonishingly quickly approximates the ideal goal, namely "entropy" as the minimum number of bits in lossless data compression.

Towards Analytic Information Theory: Data Compression, Prediction and Universal Coding Through Anayltic Methods   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Although it is a mature area of research by any standard, new challenges arise due to new applications and new theoretical developments (e.g., there is a resurgence of interest in source coding in multimedia applications).
In the 1997 Shannon Lecture Jacob Ziv presented compelling arguments for "backing off" to a certain degree from the (first-order) asymptotic analysis of information systems in order to predict the behavior of real systems where we always face finite (and often small) lengths (of sequences, files, codes, etc.).
One way of overcoming these difficulties is to increase the accuracy of asymptotic analysis by replacing first-order analyses (e.g., a leading term of the average code length) by full asymptotic expansions and more accurate analyses (e.g., large deviations, central limit laws).

The Kiss vehicle was struck in the rear by a vehicle operated by defendant Ziv Jacob, behind which were automobiles of defendants Warnebold and Marold, also involved in the collision as were several vehicles ahead of the Kiss automobile.

On Jacob's application following trial, the court reduced Joszef Kiss's lost-earnings award to $11,500 by deducting from the $37,500 returned by the jury the sum of $26,000, representing the amount that Kiss's own automobile insurer had paid in personal-injury-protection (PIP) benefits for lost income.
