  Jacob de Wit
Jacob de Wit keerde in 1715 terug in Amsterdam, waar hij al spoedig zijn eerste (portret)opdrachten kreeg.
Jacob de Wit vond in Amsterdam een mecenas in de persoon van Jacob Cromhout, een zeer vermogend koopman en kunstliefhebber.
Hij was heimelijk zo trots op de opdracht dat hij in het geniep twee zelfportretten tussen de menigte in het schilderij schilderde.

 Jacob de Wit
Jacob de Wit was the leading decorative painter of 18th-century Holland, specializing in Roccoco ceiling and room decorations and groups of putti painted naturalistically in colour, or as imitation reliefs en grisaille.
At the age of nine, de Wit was apprenticed to Albert van Spiers (1666-1718), a painter of ceiling pictures and overmantels who had studied with Gérard de Lairesse and in Rome.
From 1708 de Wit studied at the Koninklijke Academie in Antwerp and, from 1709 to 1712, with the history painter, Jacob van Hal (1672-1718).

Naast de vele zolderstukken die hij vervaardigde, is De Wit bekend geworden om zijn ‘witjes’: geschilderde nabootsingen van marmeren reliëfs.
Het tweede plafond, 'Apollo en de vier seizoenen', oorspronkelijk gemaakt voor een ander grachtenpand, heeft sinds de restauratie in 2000 in de Cromhouthuizen een nieuwe bestemming gekregen.
Het is een van de laatste grote werken van De Wit, gemaakt in 1750.

Born in Amsterdam in 1695, Jacob de Wit was a pupil of Albert van Spiers, who was well known for his painted ceilings, doors and chimney breasts: perhaps it was thanks to Van Spiers that De Wit developed his fondness for this type of work.
De Wit’s work is characterised by his swiftly-flowing brushstrokes, and he did indeed work quickly: he was sometimes known to complete a painting in only two hours.
De Wit painted a spectacular ceiling for the Cromhouthouses in 1718.

Jacob de Wit was the outstanding Dutch decorative painter of the 18th century, active mainly in his native Amsterdam.
De Wit's style, however, was much lighter than Rubens's, with a Rococo delicacy and charm.
De Wit was also an engraver and a noted collector of Old Master drawings.

Jacob and Elizabeth were a part of the German community of South Carolina described on the Peter Rikard page.
He was discovered to be an ancestor because of a deed in 1819 [see below] in which his heirs sold land together.
On 28 August 1818, the legatees of Jacob Fry, Senior, deceased, sold to Peter Rikard 125 acres for $1115.

In the foreword Staring acknowledged the archival research on De Wit carried out by Jan Knoef (q.v.), who had died in 1948, and who shared Staring’s interest in eighteenth- and nineteenth- century art.
Staring’s 1958 publication is a thoroughly documented study on the various fields in which De Wit was active as a painter and draughtsman in Amsterdam and its surroundings.

Van Stry painted interiors and genre scenes in the style of Gabriel Metsu and Pieter de Hooch, and his landscapes reveal a close study of de Cuyp.
