Jacob do Bandolim is one of the first names in the history of the choro genre.
Jacob e Sua Gente became a regular on Rádio Guanabara, alternating with the Regional de Benedito Lacerda and the Gente do Morro group in the accompaniment of professional singers and musicians like Noel Rosa, Herivelto Martins, Dunga, Joel e Gaúcho, Elizeth Cardoso, Ataulfo Alves, Lamartine Babo, Araci de Almeida, and Carlos Galhardo.
But do Bandolim never became a professional musician because he knew he would have lost his musical personality -- which was a very purist one.

Slipcue E-Zine: Brazilian Music Guide - Miscellaneous Albums "D"
A choro artist whose career took off well after the golden years of the genre, Do Bandolim was a stellar performer; these recordings from the 1950s and '60s showcase him in a variety of styles -- at times jazzy, or poppish, or more traditional.
Do Cavaquinho, a central member of the Portela samba school's velha guarda, is celebrated and spotlighted on this fine, affectionate album, which is, amazingly enough, his first solo album.
The driving force behind the album is Phonomotor label head, pop star Marisa Monte, whose father was head of the Portela escola in the 1960s, but while she bankrolled the project, Monte remains very much in the background, content merely to document, not to dominate.
