 Jacob van Ruisdael
Not surprisingly there is a certain element of patriotic pride in Van Ruisdael's focus on the unassuming surroundings of his native Haarlem for his subject matter, as opposed to the spectacular Alpine sunsets of the Italianate style of some of his European contemporaries.
Jacob van Ruisdael came from a family of landscape painters, which could explain why his style blossomed at such an early age and why he was an almost fully developed overnight success at the age of only seventeen.
Van Ruisdael was also interested in rendering the texture and specific characteristics of individual species of trees like the oak, willow or elm.

Jacob van Ruisdael Biography / Biography of Jacob van Ruisdael Biography Biography
Jacob van Ruisdael was born in Haarlem, the son of the painter Isaak van Ruisdael, whose works are unknown to us, and the nephew of the gifted landscape painter Salomon van Ruysdael.
Ruisdael enriched the basic framework of the composition with a remarkable counterpoint of gently undulating contours, in which the curves of the meandering river, the paths, hills, clouds, and branches and crowns of trees underline, echo, and complete one another.
Ruisdael's impact is seen in the great English landscapes of the 18th century, especially early works by Thomas Gainsborough, and in French landscapes of the 19th century, notably by Gustave Courbet.

Jacob van Ruisdael (1628/9-1682) has rightly come to be regarded as the finest and most versatile landscapist of the "heroic age" of Dutch painting, namely the third quarter of the 17th century.
As Ruisdael scholar Seymour Slive has noted, it is not known who taught him the technique of etching or elements of the graphic vocabulary he was able to employ with impressive competence in his earliest prints of 1646.
Ruisdael is attempting to capture the physicality of nature through his creative manipulation of the etching technique.

Apollo: Jacob van Ruisdael: A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings, Drawings and Etchings - Book Review
Jacob van Ruisdael (1628/29-82) is rightly regarded as the greatest landscape painter of the heroic age of Dutch art.
Ruisdael was the pre-eminent practitioner of the 'classical phase' of naturalistic Dutch landscape, producing everything from intimate scenes of the dunes around his native Haarlem, to majestic woodlands, expansive panoramas, grain fields, soaring mountains and thunderous waterfalls, quiet beaches and tempestuous seascapes, cityscapes and winter scenes.
Ruisdael's oeuvre has at last received the monumental and comprehensive study it deserves; Seymour Slive's excellent, lavishly illustrated, and weighty (a daunting 788 pages!) new book is the product of more than thirty years of research, and offers for the first time a catalogue of all the master's paintings, drawings and rare etchings.

Born in Haarlem into a family of artists, Jacob van Ruisdael was probably trained by his father, Isaac van Ruisdael (1599-1677), a painter, ebony frame maker, and picture dealer, and by his uncle, Salomon van Ruysdael (1600/3?-1670).
Among Ruisdael’s recognizable subjects are the castle at Bentheim in nearby Westphalia and the views of the bleaching fields and distant skyline of Haarlem seen from a high dune.
Ruisdael’s range of subject matter is wide, however, and includes the wooded dunes, sluices and country roads of the Dutch countryside, as well as icy winter scenes under steely skies and seascapes animated and integrated by storm-driven clouds.
