Of all the Jacobean motifs, the pomegranate stands out as the most fascinating, to me. An exotic fruit, unknown to the British before their ventures into colonization, the pomegranate is a symbol of eternal life.
This is done in the Early American style of crewel embroidery using traditional stitches flat and economy stitches rather than long-and-short stitching and satin.
As are all the pieces in this Quartet, it is a superb piece using several Jacobean motifs and a myriad of complex stitches.
