Pierneef was born in Pretoria, from Dutch parentage.
Pierneef returned to Pretoria at the age of 18, where he met with and was encouraged by already established Sout African artists such as Anton van Wouw, Hugo Naude and Frans Oerder.
Pierneef quit his job as lecturer and became a full-time painter in 1923, due to differences regarding the curriculum with the Department of Education.

Jacobus Hendrik Pierneef (generally just known as Pierneef) (13 August 1886 4 October 1957) was a (A native or inhabitant of South Africa) South African landscape artist, generally considered to be one of the best of the old South African masters.
Pierneef's style was to reduce and simplify the landscape to geometric structures, using flat planes, lines and colour to present the harmony and order in nature.
Pierneef was born in (City in the Transvaal; the seat of the executive branch of the government of South Africa) Pretoria, from (The West Germanic language of the Netherlands) Dutch parentage.

Police say despite a substantial reward and ongoing investigations, they have not come up with any new leads in the search of a Pierneef painting that was stolen from the SABC.
Jacobus Hendrik Pierneef painted the valley landscape in 1955.
The painting was stolen on Monday, May 17 from the 15th floor of the SABC Radio Park building.

'Pierneef, Black White and Coloured', an exhibition of paintings and lino cuts by Ryan Arenson presents a comprehensive body of new work, resulting from the artist's extended residency in Paris, which began in 1999, when he won the ABSA Atelier award.
In considering the work of apartheid art master Johannes Hendrik Pierneef, Arenson interrogates the compositional values of his linocuts, and meticulously translates them into oil and enamel paintings.
Arenson comments on his work Too scared to live and too scared to die (oil on canvas): '...distinct visual quotations include a Japanese stencil design and imagery derived from a Pierneef linocut.
