JOSEPH INTO PHARAOH'S PRESENCE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Amigoni is a good example of itinerant artist: he worked in different Italian states, in Bavaria, England, France and finally in Spain as Court Painter to Ferdinand VI.
"Amigoni's Joseph into Pharaoh's presence" (together with its pendant the "Cup in Benjamin's sack") were painted for this royal dwelling, as well.
The painting could be an allegory of virtues with which the monarch was to be endowed, as it is likewise suggested in the ceiling of the room in which this canvas was originally supposed to be located.

Jacopo Amigoni was a Venetian history and portrait painter who worked in an international style all over Europe.
He worked for some years for the Elector of Bavaria and then came to London in 1730, where he painted several decorative cycles though these, according to Vertue, were commissions and not his personal preference.
Jacopo Amigoni died in 1752, just as his many of his finest works were being destroyed.

Juno Receiving the Head of Argos by AMIGONI, Jacopo
Juno and Mercury, one of four mythologies painted by Amigoni for Moor Park, remains too little idealized, and faintly ludicrous.
Imagination has been less exercised than industry; Amigoni's people are real enough to be commonplace - and to feel somewhat at ease when shown sitting on clouds.
with Amigoni the rococo remains solid and earthbound.

 Jacopo Amigoni - Venere Anadiomene
The Venus here reproduced, a work of certain attribution to Jacopo Amigoni, is to be considered from the late oeuvre of the artist, even though some doubts may remain about the exact chronology.
This inventory, written on the 2 May 1783, just a few months after his death (4), was compiled by the painter Giuseppe Becchetti, Academician of the Bolognese Academia Clementina, and on sheet 37 one finds: ‘Un quadro nella sua cornice intagliata e indorata rappresenta in abbozzo una Venere di mano dell’Amigoni.
The existence of the present Venus, which can be tied to the inventory by its dimensions and structure is a further piece of evidence in the reconstruction not only of Jacopo’s corpus but also of the Broschi collection, certainly one of the most interesting of the Settecento.

Venus and Adonis by AMIGONI, Jacopo
Born in Naples but trained as an artist in Venice, Jacopo Amigoni soon began working in the Rococo style.
Like Sebastiano Ricci and Pellegrino he often left Venice to work as one of Europe's foremost cosmopolitan artists, fixing the evanescent rather fragile delicacy of his style in great frescoes and paintings of historical subjects both profane and sacred.
Adonis, arrow (spear in other versions) in hand and hunting dog (or dogs) straining at the leash, is impatient to be off, while Venus imploringly tries to hold him back.

At court the favorite was Frederick's younger brother, Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, to the extent that the king looked into ways of passing over Frederick in the succession.
Unlike the king, Frederick was a knowledgeable amateur of painting, who patronized immigrant artists like Amigoni (illustration above right) and Jean Baptiste Vanloo, who painted the portraits of the prince and his consort for Frederick's champion William Pulteney, 1st Earl of Bath.
The list of other artists he employed—Philip Mercier, Wooton, Phillips and the French engraver Goupy—represents some of the principal figures of the English Rococo.
