At the age of 15 he became an apprentice of the Florentine painter and sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio and although in 1472 he entered the San Luca guild of painters in Florence, which would indicate that he had attained a degree of professional independence, he remained with Andrea del Verrocchio until 1480.
It was during this period, at the age of 23 he met Jacopo Saltarelli a 17 year old who is described as a "boy of Ill repute" or in other words, a hustler.
It is believed that Saltarelli attempted to flmail the young artist to prevent him from telling the world they had sex.

 Speculation - Leonardo's Sexuality
In 1476 Leonardo and three others were twice denounced to the police for having "committed sodomy" with a young man of seventeen, a person who modelled in the studio of Verrochio (Leonardo's master) called Jacopo Saltarelli.
The note said that Saltarelli "...consents to please those persons who request such wickedness of him" and that he had "served several dozen people" so it seems reasonable to suppose that he was a prostitute.
The case came before the courts twice and was dismissed on each occasion due to a lack of witnesses or evidence.

Matt & Andrej Koymasky - Famous GLTB - Leonardo da Vinci 2
While academic talk opened and closed his closet door to suit whatever morals the times mandated (he was born in 1452 and died in 1519), the accepted common knowledge is that during the Renaissance, older unmarried men -- and even married men -- had sexual relations with young men.
Imprisoned twice for same-sexual misconduct, in April 1476, da Vinci was accused of sodomy with a 17-year-old named Jacopo Saltarelli.
Leonardo's father refused to help, but his uncle enlisted the aid of Bernardo di Simone Cortigiani, an influential Florentine, to have the charges dismissed, but only after Leonardo spent two months in jail.

Leonardo da Vinci - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first known instance of his interest in youths occurred in 1476.
While still living with Verrocchio, he was twice accused anonymously of sodomy with a 17 year-old model, Jacopo Saltarelli, a youth already known to the authorities for his sexual escapades with men.
After two months in jail, he was acquitted, allegedly because no witnesses stepped forward, but actually on the strength of his father's respected position.

To cap it all, mad Jacopo Pazzi galloped into the main square shouting 'People and Liberty!', to which the assembled Florentine crowds supposedly replied, 'Balls!' -meaning, of course, the six golden balls of the Medici coat of arms.
Jacopo was forced to flee for his life, and Francesco and some of his co-conspirators were caught and hanged.Lorenzo appeared on the balcony of the Signoria, his neck bandaged against a knife wound sustained in the assault in the Cathedral and called for the jubilant crowds to disperse.

Leonardo da Vinci: Sexuality, Subliminal Themes, and the Priory of Sion
Leonardo was about 14 when he began his apprenticeship to painter Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence.
In 1476, when he was 24 and still under Verrocchio's tutelage, he and three other men were arrested on sodomy charges after being accused, anonymously, of having sex with 17-year-old male art model and prostitute, Jacopo Saltarelli.
It is worth noting that making such a charge anonymously was not an uncommon way to retaliate against one's enemies at that time -- so there may not have been any substance to the charge at all.

On the date in question, the *tamburo* was found to contain a charge that Leonardo and three other young men had engaged in homosexual acts with a 17-year-old artist's model named Jacopo Saltarelli.
The charge may have been motivated merely by spite; the accuser was never identified, no witnesses presented themselves and although the case went to court a second time two months later, it ultimately came to nothing.
