Onassis was in the early stages of filing for divorce when he died on March 15, 1975; Jacqueline was with her children in New York.
Jacqueline Onassis also appreciated the contributions of African-American writers to the American literary canon and encouraged Dorothy West, her neighbor on Martha's Vineyard and the last surviving member of the Harlem Renaissance, to complete The Wedding: a multigenerational story about race, class, wealth, and power in the United States.
