Anquetil never hid that he took drugs - a common practice me - and in a debate with a government minister on French television said that only a fool would imagine it was possible to ride Bordeaux-Paris on just water.
Anquetil argued that professional riders were workers and had the same right to treat their pains as, say, a geography teacher.
Anquetil is buried beside the church in the village of Quincampoix, north of Rouen, where a large fl monument by the traffic lights lists all his achievements.

More popular in England than in his native France (Jacques used to tell cycling fans that he was only "in it for the money"), Anquetil was invited to the RTTC awards ceremony at London's Albert Hall in 1961 to present trophies to champions Brian Kirby and Beryl Burton.
In 1965, Anquetil won the eight day, Alpine, Criterium du Dauphiné Libéré stage race at 3pm, sat through 2 hours of interviews and receptions, took a 6:30pm chartered flight to Bordeaux and won the world's longest single-day classic, the Bordeaux-Paris.

'''Jacques Anquetil''' (January 8, 1934 - November 18, 1987), was a French cyclist and the first cyclist to win the Tour de France five times, 1957 and 1961-64.
Suffering badly from indigestions after his excesses on a rest day, Anquetil received treatment from his coach in the form of a swallow of champagne.
Anquetil won all three of the Grand Tours as the first of, to this day, only four cyclists: Apart from his five tour victories (which placed him into a row with Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Miguel Induraín and Lance Armstrong), he twice won the Giro d'Italia (1960, 1964) and once the Vuelta a España (1963).

Roadcycling.com - Cycling News - Tour Heroes: "Poupou, The Eternal Second"
It was Poulidor’s bad luck to have been born at such a time that his tour career coincided with that of Jacques Anquetil on the front end and with that of Eddy Merckx on the back end.
Whereas Anquetil specialized in the “technical” aspects of racing — time-trialling, the tactics of the final sprint — Poulidor was known for his climbing and endurance.
In the late 60’s a couple of French journalists sought to puncture “poupoularite” by divulging that Poulidor was less liked in the peloton than Anquetil — that in fact he was regarded as a selfish rider while Anquetil was seen as a fair-minded sportsman by his peers.

Jacques Anquetil's pedalling style   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Not sure about Anquetil's style, but I believe it was in Lemond's book that he states that the proper pedalling style consists of pushing forward with the lower leg when the foot is in about the 9 o'clock position and pulling back when in about the 3 o'clock position.
I think 'Matre Anquetil' was acrually born to his distinctive style, rather than he learned or acquired it, as he matured as a racer.
Anquetil's style is linear, it cannot be copied but can be acquired by anyone with a will to do so, such as a victim of that back pain who has been forced out of cycling by that continuous torture.

Outwardly confident, and yet profoundly shy, rational and calculating, and yet superstitious and haunted by fear of death, Anquetil was an enigma.
He defied the conventional picture of a racing cyclist, elegant on or off the bicycle, winning seemed to come too effortlessly; and he was too fond of the good life that his successes enabled him to enjoy.
It was only as he neared retirement that Anquetil finally received the acclaim his achievements deserved.
