  Mont Blanc
Jacques Balmat had remained behind to collect crystals and the others had quite simply forgotten him in the mountain.
This night that Balmat had passed in the mountain had given them confidence, they knew from now on that it could continue to progress up to one hour late and that one could survive a bivouac in altitude.
One exaggerated the role played by Balmat in the discovery of the decisive way; one transformed the spirit which reigned during this rise, that with depend on Paccard.

 Jacques Balmat Summary
Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard reached the summit of the 15,771-foot-tall (4,807-m) Mont Blanc on August 8, 1786.
Balmat, Paccard and Saussure are widely credited with instituting the modern sport of mountaineering.
Jacques Balmat, called le Mont Blanc (1762, Chamonix valley - 1834, Sixt valley) was a French mountain guide.

It aws Bourrit, jealous of Paccard, who suggested that Balmat was the prime leader of the climb, thus starting a controversy that lasted 150 years.
Bourrit’s work was given further credibility by Alexandra Dumas, who interviewed Balmat in 1832- the story could not be contradicted by Paccard, he’d been dead 5 years.
Balmat summited Mont Blanc with Maria Paradis, a servant from Chamonix, and the first woman to summit the mountain.

Paccard, in reaction, confronted Balmat and produced a statement that Balmat signed before several witnesses stating that the route used by the two had been identified and proposed by Paccard and that Paccard had been the one to reach the summit first, with Balmat struggling to keep up.
Balmat later asserted that the statement was a forgery, but this claim has little credence.
Balmat had a reputation as a drunkard and a spendthrift, two characteristics that could have motivated him to make baseless claims for money, and his statements on the issue itself were contradictory.

 Snowshoeing - Cicerone
However, Balmat had lingered high up near the Grand Plateau – possibly looking for crystals or the route to the top – and when he came to descend he found that fresh snow covered the tracks of the party and that it was fast becoming dark.
The doctor was treating Judith Balmat, Jacques’ sick young daughter, which gave the pair ample opportunity to make plans, and as soon as the weather seemed set fair they started out up the Montagne de la Côte, bivvying at the top under a huge boulder, now known as the Gîte à Balmat.
Balmat collected his reward (only to lose it on his return in a mugging incident) and in time managed to portray Paccard as purely a passenger on this ascent.

A second attempt was made by De Saussure in June 1786: and, though it failed, it led to the discovery, by a guide named Jacques Balmat, of a preferable route, which proved to be the only one at all practicable.
Unfortunately, De Saussure, who, from his persevering efforts, deserved to be the Conqueror of Mont Blanc, was anticipated in the honour by a gentle-man named Paccard, to whom Balmat imparted his secret, and who, under Balmat's guidance, gained the summit of the mountain in August of the last-named year.
On this occasion, he had a tent carried, in which he might take a night's rest at whatever place should prove suitable: and all his other preparations were of the most careful kind.
