Jacques Barrot: la sécurité routière progresse trop lentement en Europe
Barrot, qui s'exprimait à l'ouverture des deuxièmes Journées parlementaires européennes de la sécurité routière, a souligné que 41.600 personnes avaient été tuées sur les routes en 2005 dans les pays de l'Union européenne, soit une baisse de 17,5 % en quatre ans.
Parmi les autres "chantiers ouverts" par la Commission, M. Barrot a cité la généralisation "très souhaitable" des feux de croisement pour les voitures pendant la journée ainsi que la "nécessaire mobilisation des opinions publiques" sur la sécurité routière, annonçant la tenue le 27 avril 2007 d'une première journée européenne de la sécurité routière.

Jacques Barrot, the new EU transport commissioner who failed to disclose a conviction in 2000 for embezzlement, looked set to keep his job on Monday, after a surprise rescue by European Socialists.
The position of Mr Barrot, a French conservative and ally of President Jacques Chirac, looked precarious after his eight-month suspended jail sentence over a party funding scandal was revealed last week.
Mr Barrot was one of a number of senior political figures in France caught up in party funding scandals in the 1980s and 1990s.

The details of the Barrot affair appear minor against the long and sorry history of party funding offences in many continental countries.
But Mr Barrot's failure to mention the episode either to Mr Barroso or to the European parliament has shown an inability to appreciate the need for commissioners to be totally candid if they are to earn the trust of an increasingly sceptical European public.

Barrot has been a European Commissioner since January 2000, serving as Commissioner for Regional Policy in the Prodi Commission before being selected as a Vice-President and Commissioner for Transport in the Barroso Commission.
On November 18, 2004, Nigel Farage of the UK Independence Party told the European Parliament that Barrot had been convicted of fraud in 2000, for embezzling FRF 25m (US$ 3.8m, £2 million) from government funds and diverting it into the funds of his party.
