Jacques Paul Migne - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Jacques Paul Migne (25 October, 1800 - 25 October, 1875) was a French priest who published inexpensive and widely-distributed editions of theological works, encyclopedias and the texts of the Church Fathers.
Migne had become convinced of the power of the press and the sheer value of raw information widely distributed.
Tragically, however, for Migne, the night of 12-13 February 1868 a devastating fire, which began in the printing plant, destroyed Migne's establishment, which was also producing religious objects.

 About Patrologia Latina Database
Migne himself reprinted volumes up to 1865, at which time he sold the literary rights for the Patrologia Latina to the firm of Garnier in Paris.
Migne originally intended the Patrologia Latina to span the whole history of Latin Christianity up to the eve of the Reformation.
However, he eventually judged that it would be wiser to conclude the series with the year 1216 as, after that year, the explosion of philosophical and theological writing made it impossible for any series to include even representative portions of the principal texts.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Jacques-Paul Migne
The great value of the collection lies in the fact that at a moderate cost and in a handy form a great work of reference was produced, and a whole series of rare and scattered writings were gathered together, and made easily accessible to the learned world.
Up to 1856, Migne was also proprietor of a journal La Vérité, which gathered articles from papers of every tendency, and republished them as aids to a comprehensive induction on current ideas and facts.
The Archbishop of Paris was averse to the commercial elements in the work, forbade the continuance of the business, and, finally, suspended the publisher from his priestly functions.

Migne's Patrologia Latina was originally printed in 217 volumes from 1844 to 1855.
However Migne did incorporate medieval texts written after 1216 where these were traditionally attached to an earlier work, often as a commentary or an introduction to it.
While wanting to respect Migne's evident wishes, we have felt it necessary to distinguish roughly between the medieval and modern authors contained in the database.
