THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT at Film Forum in New York City Jacques Demy's widow, the filmmaker Agnès Varda, was the driving force behind the successful restoration of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and she and her family were equally determined to make sure Young Girls was also restored so that future audiences might enjoy the film. Jacques' initial idea, even before finding a subject, was to create, in a very personal fashion, a film that would pay homage to the American musical, alternating sequences of dialogue, song and dance.
