The Claremont Institute - A New Birth of Freedom
Jaffa sets out to explain why Lincoln thought that his struggles against slavery and for the Union and free elections were really one-and-the-same.
Jaffa devotes some of his best pages to proving that equality and the social compact (he seldom uses the term "social contract" in this book) were regarded by Lincoln and the founders as essentially the same idea.
For Jaffa in A New Birth of Freedom, Lincoln is the profoundest defender of American republicanism, and American republicanism is a kind of counterpart to the ancient city and the holy city of the medieval world.

Before its surrender, Jaffa had been one of Palestine's largest and wealthiest cities with a population in excess of 100,000.
And it is a situation that has produced one of the paradoxes of contemporary Palestinian politics, where a population which is fully aware of the shortcomings of its president, is nonetheless quick to defend him against Israeli aggression.
The inside of my great-grandfather's old house had been modified and modernised, but even so, both my mother and her sister were alive to the place, their curiosity stirred like that of a child who is returning to her home after a long absence and decides to explore every room and every corner anew.

Still, the city's southern border, the port of Jaffa, is as old as they come: Jonah set sail from here for what turned out to be his journey to the belly of a whale.
According to archaeologists, Jaffa was founded in the Middle Canaanite period, around 1600 B.C. For the next thousand years one ancient people dominated it after another: Egyptians, Philistines, Israelites, Phoenicians, and Greeks.
After being taken by Crusaders twice, in the 11th and 12th centuries, Jaffa was recaptured by the Muslims and remained largely under Arab control until the 20th century.

Jaffa has much to teach about the conflict between Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln and even more to teach us about politics in general.
Today it is almost inconceivable that we should be involved in a foreign war in which the President would be denounced as the aggressor and the foreign enemy referred to as the victim by leading members of the political opposition.
Of course Jaffa's point is that this is very nearly what Lincoln did regarding Lincoln's opposition to James Polk and the Mexican-American War.

Before setting out for Jaffa, Richard killed the Muslim captives that he had because he felt that Saladin was not honoring the terms of Acre's surrender.
Richard was then able to take Jaffa, and he then spent some time consolidating his gains.
Because of Richard's need for departure and because the resources of both Richard and Saladin were very low, they reached a three-year truce on 2 September 1192, in which the Christians had to give up a small portion of their gains and Christian pilgrims would be allowed to enter Jerusalem.

Then, in addition to this, the soldiers, finding their sufferings intolerable, and seeing no hope of relief, began to desert in great numbers, and Richard finally found that there was no alternative for him but to fall back again to the sea-shore.
Richard began to think that it would be necessary for him to establish his army somewhat permanently in the strong places on the coast, and wait until he could obtain re-enforcements from Europe before attempting again to advance toward Jerusalem.
During all this time the army kept their communications open with the other towns along the coast—with Jaffa, and Acre, and other strongholds, so that at length the whole shore was well fortified, and secure in their possession.

As for O'Neill and Teal'c: in typical Jaffa style, once the stargate on the planet they are on quit working, they all accused each other of sabotaging it and begin fighting.
It's also insulting to think that O'Neill would happily watch such a scene, although I realized this was because Felger was imagining that he and O'Neill were so similar their reactions would be the same.
They failed to learn the value of not messing with what they don't understand - I would think some of their allies would be pretty miffed at having the gate network offline for so long, not to mention the unknown number of lives that were jeopardized.
