Jag Panzer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jag Panzer is a North American power metal band.
Colorado natives Jag Panzer first came together in late 81, being inspired by the onslaught of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal that had taken the heavy rock world by storm in the early 80s.
The band, who were all in their late teens at the time, played at local venues in the Denver club circuit, and recorded a legandary EP in 1983, later known as " Tyrants".

Jag Panzer are a veteran band who have hung in there through the years and who have developed a strong fan base that continues to scoop up their CDs and fill their shows today.
That should all change with "Thane To The Throne." Jag Panzer uses Shakespeare's "Macbeth" as a background story for their CD and power metal proves to be an apt medium to tell this classic tale of a cruel world inhabited by ambition, treachery, guilt, prophecy, revenge, lust for power, self-destruction, and nature's unforgiving fury.
Jag Panzer is Harry Conklin on vocals, Chris Broderick on guitar and keyboards, Mark Briody on guitar and keyboards, John Tetley on bass and backing vocals, and Rikard Stjernquist on drums.

Aptly titled The Fourth Judgement, Colorado's Jag Panzer latest release is a reunion of sorts for the band which seemed to gather more momentum in absentia than when actually releasing albums in the mid-'80s.
Jag Panzer has always been an also-ran, a band that wants to occupy the same territory as Tad Morose or Nevermore and never comes close.
In the past the panzers have suffered from ugly vocals, indifferent music and a monotonous approach and the new album's opener, entitled Feast Or Famine, seems to repeat the formula.

In this sense, Jag Panzer is in stark contrast to a European power metal band like Stratovarius (which I've been listening to a lot lately) whose songs (and albums, basically) are repetitive and interchangeable.
Rather, Jag Panzer put the brakes on quite a bit to present a technical section; the band only cuts loose in a power metal sense a few times on the album.

Jag Panzer (the name is taken from jagdpanzer, a German tank, in case you didn't know) are actually one of the oldest still-active power metal bands in the United States.
But the problem with Jag Panzer is that it is no longer the early 1980's, and this style of music is, plain and simply, nothing special.
In fact, my biggest problem with Jag Panzer is that they are so middle ground, so "every type of power metal and yet none," that the end result is, to me, somewhat bland.

Jag Panzer's long history dates back to 1981 when guitarist Mark Briody, bassist John Tetley, drummer Rick Hilyard and vocalist Harry Conklin formed under the moniker Tyrants, later to be changed to JAG PANZER (taken from the German World War II tank Jagdpanzer) in 1983.
JAG PANZER's new album, Thane To The Throne, takes the Colorado metal machine's sound into further dimensions, this time via a concept story line based on the Shakespeare classic Macbeth.
JAG PANZER have done a magnificent job in telling the tale of Macbeth through their electrifying music, and the segues between songs along with the use of more unorthodox instruments (including viola and minstrel-like singing) add to the imagination of the story line.

Jag Panzer was originally formed in the 1980's when their style of music was more appropriate.
Having member problems and breaking up in 1985, only to reform again during the power metal reincarnation of the early to mid-1990's, Jag Panzer has the credentials and experience that many of the new school bands playing traditional metal claim to have.
Tracks like opener "Take to the Sky", "Cold is the Blade (and the Heart That Wields It)" are both great tracks that show Jag Panzer laying a new school element on top of their traditional metal roots, as well as creating that epic, empowered feeling that makes this style such a hit.

'Mechanized Warfare' could so easily have been associated with the 'cringe-factor', but although this is nothing new, Jag Panzer's years of experience and expertise have culminated to produce a fine traditional metal album and solid addition to their back-catalogue.
