They are distinguished from assault guns in that thier primary focus was to hunt and destroy tanks, hence the name JagdPanzer or "tank hunter." As newer, heavier tanks were deveoped, the chassis were used to produce larger and more powerful tank destroyers.
The JagdPanzer VI JagdTiger was outfitted with a massive 105mm high velocity gun that could destroy anything on the battlefield.
The ultimate evolution of the tank destroyer was the JgPz VIB (PanzerJager VI Ausf B), built on the hull of the massive King Tiger.

Two prototypes, one with Porsche suspension (made up of 8 roadwheels) and one with Henschel suspension (made up of 9 roadwheels) were completed in February of 1944.
Its first designation was Jagdpanzer VI, but later on it was named Jagdtiger and received number Sd.Kfz.186.
Elements of sPzJagAbt 512 took part in the Operation "Fruhlingerswachen" in Hungary (part of VI SS Panzer Army), and then in the defence of the Fatherland on both Western and Eastern Front.

The proposed role of the Jagdtiger's was simple: to support infantry and combat armoured vehicles at very long ranges.
Interestingly the original designation of this vehicle was Jagdpanzer VI, but later it was renamed Jagdtiger and received the standard German number of Sd.Kfz.186.
Now getting this beast into production was a high priority but not more so than that of the PzKpfw V Panther – so although production was planned to start in December of 1943 it actually started in the July of 1944.
