Jagrup Brar was first elected as the MLA for Surrey Panorama Ridge on October 28, 2004 and was re-elected on May 17, 2005.
Jagrup is the Opposition Deputy Caucus Chair, and serves as Opposition Critic for Public Safety and Solicitor General.
Jagrup is married and lives in Surrey with his wife Rajwant and their daughter.

The Surrey Teachers’ Association decided that it would endorse Jagrup Brar, the NDP candidate in the by-election, and began work immediately in case the by-election was called over the summer.
Brar took 53.5% of the vote (The Liberals had taken 60% in the 2001 election).
Brar said the results are a warning to Campbell and the Liberals that "three-and-a-half years of mismanagement, scandals, cuts, and broken promises have come home to roost in one of their strongest ridings."

Brar, a newcomer to political life, won by a 20-point margin as he took 53.5 per cent of the votes cast in the byelection, compared to 33.4 per cent for Polak.
Brar denied the allegations by saying the byelection results had nothing to do with block voting and everything to do with discontent with the actions of the government over the past three and a half years.
Brar said of the 500 people who worked on his campaign, fewer than 200 were Indo-Canadian, proof of the broad support for both him and the NDP.

Mary Polak is the former chair of the Surrey School Board in Surrey, British Columbia and is now a Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia (MLA) for the riding of Langley.
She tried unsuccessfully to gain a seat in the Legislature as a candidate for the right-of-centre BC Liberal Party, but lost the 2004 Surrey—Panorama Ridge by-election to Jagrup Brar, the New Democratic Party of British Columbia candidate.
Her margin of victory was much less than that won by the Liberal incumbent, Lynn Stephens in 2001.

Surrey-Whalley was the 11th best seat for the NDP in 1996 and the 11th worst for the Liberals in 2001 although the boundaries were slightly changed.

Seems to me that a lot of folks in the Indo-Canadian community are tired of working their butts off and organizing to nominate and elect non-Indo-Canadian candidates.

Apparently he hasn’t learned that Indo-Canadians are not a bloc vote, but most fo them do take their participatory democracy seriously; it was one of those traditions they brought over from the old country.
Hint: it involved taking the piss out of Surrey, the parochial attitude of my paper (which considers anything east of oh, say, Renfrew Street to be foreign territory), and writing in the style of a stereotypical British foreign corro in some far-flung corner of the Empire.
