The Compact Jaguar saloon was introduced a year later powered by a 2.4 liter version of the XK engine and known as the 2.4 this car later modified became known as the MKII and was to remain in production for over ten years.
The 1957 Jaguar XK SS was a direct descendant of the famous Le Mans-winning D-types of the mid-1950s.
A new 3.6 litre 225bhp six-cylinder engine, the AJ6 was introduced in 1983 in the XJ-S. Jaguar’s new XJ6 range was launched in Europe in late 1986 and in the USA early in 1987, with either 2.9 litre or 3.6 litre versions of the AJ6 engine.

Jaguar was among the first manufacturers to offer independent rear suspension on its cars and the original design, first introduced on the 1961 E-type, was still used on the series 3 XJ6 with harder to service inboard brakes.
Originally, the XJ40 engine bay was designed not to accept any Vee engine, something the designers did to ensure that then owner British Leyland wouldn't be tempted to use a Rover V8 to power the new XJ40.
The earlier versions of the XJ40, still under the influence of Jaguar's dark days, had their shares of problems which were solved with time and the latest cars (92 to 94) are fairly reliable.

We have found that improving the response from the engine in part throttle operation will often deliver the same performance in a higher gear, thus the overall fuel consumption is hardly altered even though the engine is much livelier.
Jaguar's solution on the 6 litre XJ-S was to take the intakes over the top of the radiator but despite small "tuning holes" in the ducts to kill resonance, to some people those engines display an unpleasant low speed drone.
Jaguar designed their V12 inlet manifolds originally in the 1960s when manufacturing techniques were such that pragmatism often took precedence over idealism.

I was dreaming of changing the sideline to follow the wonderful contours of Jaguar Mark I Coupe that was an early study made at Jaguar factory - it is a pity that it never commenced.
The 2.4/3.4 L sedan was the first unit-construction saloon of all Jaguars and therefore it was conservatively overdesigned and was actually quite strong.
The speedometer is a Jaguar 420 one with internals from ser III and using XJ-40 magnetic pick-up through an adaptor made by Robinson Instrument Services.

Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons was on hand to personally demonstrate the car; incidentally he was known to prefer the styling of coupe to the convertible which may explain why both Geneva show cars were coupes.
Original reaction to the car was such that Jaguar was not ready to mass produce it and it would take 2 years to finally create the tooling needed to produce the steel body instead of the hand made aluminum panel used on the early car.
Once again, history repeated itself with Jaguar launching a new engine designed for a saloon in a sports car, just like they had done with the XK engine in 1948 and incidentally as they will do again with the AJ6 engine in the mid eighties and even the V8 in 1996.

AJ6 Engineering offers revised butterfly housings on an exchange basis in which the entire bore is enlarged from 2-1/2" to 2-7/8" (32% airflow area increase) and larger butterflies are fitted.
Since on one side of the engine the intake ports will be on the outside and the exhaust ports will be toward the center, one of the heads must be turned around backwards, and therefore some complicated fabrication work is required.
In the basic bypass oil cooling system in the Jaguar V-12, only the oil that is relieved by the pressure relief valve is piped to the oil cooler in front of the radiator, and from there back to the intake of the oil pump.

This layout was not unique to Jaguar and almost seemed to be a fashion in the early 1960s with BRM and Ferrari using it in Formula 1 and also Ford going the same way for their advanced 4 valve, 4 cam, Indy V8.
