Jaguar AJ6 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jaguar had considered cutting the V12 in half to build a V6, or possibly a V8, but chose instead to develop a new inline-6.
The cylinders are inclined, as in a slant-6, by 22 degrees.
The 2.9 used a SOHC head from the Jaguar V12 engine, and was prone to failure.

Jaguar V12 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jaguar's V12 was one of the premiere powerplants of the 1970s and 1980s.
Their first car, XJR6, used the 6.0 L engine, but in the following year the engine was upgraded to 6.9 L and in 1988 the XJR9 used the engine's most famous displacement of 7.0 L. By 1991, the V12 was good for 7.4 L inside the XJR12, developing an impressive 750 bhp.
Lister Cars, a well-known Jaguar tuner with a long history of technical collaboration with the British automaker, was the first to use the TWR-tuned engine in a road car.

Jaguar (car) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jaguar also owns the Daimler car company (not to be confused with Daimler-Benz), which it bought in 1960 from Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA).
In 1959, the car was improved with a larger engine and wider windows and became the Mark 2, one of the most recognizable Jaguar models ever produced.
The Jaguar Mark 2 saloon gained a reputation as a popular getaway car among the British criminal fraternity in the 1960s.

A V12 engine is a V engine with 12 cylinders.
V12 engines used to be common in Formula One and endurance racing.
V12 is a common configuration for large diesel engines; most are available with differing numbers of cylinders in V configuration to offer a range of power ratings.

Jim Randle, Jaguar's chief engineer at the time, wanted to create the ultimate supercar and convinced several of the other engineers at Jaguar to help him make his dream reality.
The V12 was too bulky and the lower displacement was offset by using twin Garrett T3 turbochargers, four camshafts, and four valves per cylinder.
Also because of the V6 engine, the length of the car was reduced by an astounding ten inches from the prototype, but the car remained extremely wide at 6 feet, 6 inches.

 Jaguar V12 engine
This layout was not unique to Jaguar and almost seemed to be a fashion in the early 1960s with BRM and Ferrari using it in Formula 1 and also Ford going the same way for their advanced 4 valve, 4 cam, Indy V8.
Jaguar had to do a lot of work on the inlet port geometry to get the same specific power from the twin cam V12 as had been achieved with relative ease a decade or so before from the XK.
The team responsible were respected and experienced engineers and would surely not have compromised the installation of carburetters by placing the distributor and plugs in the centre of the vee unless they envisaged only using fuel injection from the outset.

My venerable Jaguar V12 engine was performing well but as it was out of the car for the engine bay restoration it was a good opportunity to bring it up to scratch.
The internals of the V12 are rather complex around the overhead cams, timing chain and heads etc. Too many complications, special tools and specialist knowledge required for my liking, therefore a home rebuild was out of the question and it was off to a Jaguar V12 expert for the engine.
As is common with the all alloy Jaguar V12 the heads were “frozen” in place due to chemical reaction between the steel head studs and the aluminium head castings.

 The Jaguar V12 engine
By and large the V12 was a very reliable engine, as one would expect, but it was not without problems although few were really serious.
Rapid warm-up is essential for compliance with modern emissions legislation and an engine system that contains 5 or 6 gallons of coolant, as in the case of the V12 Jaguar, is struggling under a hopeless handicap.
In fact the timing chain of the V12 probably has an easier time than most with plenty of overlap of both the firing impulses from the crankshaft and the torsional loading from the camshafts.

 Jaguar V12 - Motorbase
The new engine broke much new ground for Jaguar and was fitted to the new Series 3 E-Type, later in 1972 it was also fitted to the new "super-saloons", the XJ12/Daimler Double Six.
In E-Type form the V12 produced 272bhp which was enough to propel the car way past the 150mph mark.
Following the demise of the E-Type in 1975 the V12 engine lived on in the fuel injected XJS and continued in the XJ12 models right up until the XJ40 V12 in the late 80's.

The Jaguar V12 engine was significantly improved over the years, having been introduced in 1971 with a 5,345cc capacity.
Fuel consumption for a vehicle with a kerb weight of 2000 kgs is surprisingly low: at a steady 90 km/h 26.6 mpg (10.6 l/100 km) is achieved and at 120 km/h 21.7 (13.0 l/100 km).
On average, servicing is only required between 12,000 and 16,000 kilometres, and if the engine is well maintained, the only additional costs are a couple of litres of oil and, of course, six more spark plugs over the six cylinder Jaguar.

In Jaguar's history two engines have been very important: the XK engine and the famous Jaguar V12.
The Jaguar V12 engine was designed and developed by a team of engineers, among who W.M. Heynes, C.W.I. Baily, W.T.F. Hassan, and H. Mundy.
The prototype was initially built-in the XJ13 for testing purposes and later in the Mark X of which the engine compartment was big enough.

The XJ12 version, with a 5.3 L V12 engine, was again part of the lineup along with long-wheelbase models and a coupé, now considered a collector's item due to its rarity.
The single cam 2.9 L straight-6 engine found in Europe was a derivative of Jaguar's legendary 6.0 L V12 HE, but it proved to be underpowered and thirsty compared to the 3.6.
The engine was later replaced with the 3.2 L, based on the durable 3.6 L, which then became the 4.0 L. By the late 1980s, Ford had become Jaguar's owner and ordered the XJ40 be "retrolutionized", reintroducing the style of the popular Series III.

Jaguar automobile history and database - the Jaguar XJ6 and XJ12 Series 1 from 1968 to 1973
Jaguar had several reasons to wish to streamline their large range of cars, but the most important two must have been a) the sheer expense involved in producing so many model variants, and b) the impending introduction in the United States of safely and emissions legislation.
Much was done to improve Jaguars already impressive chassis engineering, and items such as a double bulkhead between engine and passenger compartments to cut down on transmitted noise, and tuning of the front and rear subframes to reduce road noise made it a superbly refined car.
This engine was made available for the XJ range in July 1972, and the resulting model was called the XJ12.

Between 1949 1957 Jaguar were actively involved in motor racing in order to create a sporting image, with 5 wins at Le Mans 24 Hour Race as well as Sebring and many other international races and rallies.
The XK engine had been developed and powered all these cars to victory, however the engine was considered to be at its maximum development, the long stroke imposed limitations on crankshaft speeds with critical third order vibrational characteristics.
While Ferrari and Lamborghini also had V12 engines, they were produced and provided in limited numbers in special edition cars, the Jaguar V12 engine was unique in being the only engine of its type in volume production anywhere in the world.
