Topic: Jahn Teller effect

Jahn-Teller effect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Jahn-Teller effect, sometimes also known as Jahn-Teller distortion, describes the geometrical distortion of the electron cloud in a non-linear molecule under certain situations.
The Jahn-Teller effect can be demonstrated experimentally by investigation of the UV-VIS absorbance spectra of inorganic compounds.

 Edward Teller | Biography | atomicarchive.com
Teller graduated with a degree in chemical engineering at the University of Karlsruhe and received his Ph.D. in physics under Werner Heisenberg in 1930 at the University of Leipzig; his doctoral dissertation dealt with one of the first accurate quantum mechanical treatments of the hydrogen molecular ion.
In 1942, Teller was invited to be part of Robert Oppenheimer's summer planning seminar at UC Berkeley for the origins of the Manhattan Project.
Teller continued to be a tireless advocate of a strong defense policy, calling for the development of advanced thermonuclear weapons and continued nuclear testing.

Dynamic Jahn–Teller Effect in Buckyball Cations
From the valence photoelectron spectrum, the group was able to unambiguously identify the relaxed geometry of the ionic ground state and determine that it was different from that believed to hold in matrix-isolated ions.
The Jahn–Teller effect in buckyball cations is associated with the breakdown of the widely used Born–Oppenheimer approximation that allows theorists to calculate the electronic and vibrational states separately with any interaction between the two systems treatable as a small perturbation.
The structural distortion that accompanies the Jahn–Teller effect is reflected in the photoionization spectrum.

The effect occurs for all nonlinear molecules in degenerate electronic states, the degeneracy of the state being removed by the effect.
It was first predicted in 1937 by H. Jahn and E. Teller.
In early experimental work, the effect often "disappeared" or was masked by other molecular interactions.

Magnetic interactions and the co-operative Jahn-Teller effect in KCuF3
The effect of the magnetic order on the density of states was found to be comparatively small.
One of the principal problems appears to be the experimentally well-characterized zero-point deviations in the spin direction, which are included neither in the Hartree-Fock theory nor in the Ising model we use to interpret the data in terms of exchange constants.
The second effect is an enhanced stabilization of the antiferromagnetic state relative to the ferromagnetic.

Magnetism and superconductivity are somewhat exclusive phenomena, and in conventional superconductors magnetic impurities have a strong pair-breaking effect.
However, non-local effects become significant in high fields, and for LuNi2B2C and related borocarbides a phase transition to a square vortex lattice is observed by a number of techniques.
It is a single-ion effect, but in a periodic solid, coupling with the elastic properties of the lattice provides an effective interaction between neighboring magnetic ions, leading to the co-operative Jahn-Teller effect.

In a first stage it was then believed that the Jahn-Teller effect was either drastically reduced, dynamic in character or simply non existent in Ni perovskites.
The origin of the O isotope effect in cuprates and manganites is actually a matter of discussion.
The present work gives strong support to this picture since this concept is also able to give a qualitative explanation of the isotope effect in Ni perovskites.

Because of the high symmetry involved, the Jahn-Teller effect is the natural starting point for considering electron-phonon (or vibronic) interactions in icosahedral molecules.
The electrical and spectroscopic properties of fullerene and fulleride compounds depend intimately on the coupling between the electronic and vibrational modes of these systems, and this book addresses the fundamental theoretical questions.
In particular, a chapter is devoted to the connection between the theory and experimental observations, such as ESR (electron spin resonance) effects and molecular spectra.

The interpretation of the fine structure by a Jahn-Teller effect is discussed controversially in many cases.
Another example is the spectrum of the 2T2-2E transition in hexagonal Zn0:Cu2+, which shows not only an istope effect with respect to the impurity mass but also an isotope effect with respect to the mass of the O ligands[2].
The isotope shift of a fine structure transition is calculated from the mass dependance of the energy of the LVMs and the change of the energy levels of the final and initial state of the transition with respect to the energy of the LVM caused by a dynamical Jahn-Teller effect.

The Jahn-Teller effect is manifested in a variety of phenomena in physics, chemistry and biochemistry, in many types of crystals and molecules.
This book deals with fundamental questions of the quantum mechanics of systems with orbital electrons, concentrating on novel phenomena and materials such as colossal magnetoresistance, high Tc superconductivity, buckminsterfullerenes, magnetic materials and biologically important clusters.
All chapters share a common general approach to the problems, based on the analysis of vibronic interaction: electron-vibrational interaction in molecules and electron-phonon interaction in crystals.
