Jaintia Hills District is a part of the erstwhile Jaintia Kingdom which is also known as Sutnga Kingdom prior to the dawn of legends and chronicles in the annals of history.
The present day Jaintia Hills District is but a remnant of the erstwhile Jaintia Kingdom which had been subjected to repeated divisions and partitions since the advent of the British in the North Eastern region and immediately after India's Independence.
It was computed by scholars that U Chyngklein Am, the eldest son of KA Li Dakha and U Luh Ryndi, ruled the Jaintia state in the 3rd century B.C. This district has one of the largest collections of ancient monolith, menhirs and tomb stones.

Some scholars think that originally the Jaintia people belonged to the 'Tsin' tribe and therefore were known as 'Tsinteng' or 'Synteng', which eventually came to be known as 'Zyten' and 'Jaintia'.

His son Naranarayana (1540-1584) was a truly great ruler, who not only integrated large portions of Assam and present North Bengal, but also established his suzerainty over many neighbouring kingdoms like Cachar, Tripura, and the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
Simultaneously had built up the Kamata Kingdom, followed by the Koch Kingdom in Kamarupa, the latter founded by Biswa Simha (1515-1540).
Another important ruler of this region after the Pala King was Prithu, who had successfully resisted the first Muslim invasion of Kamarupa, led by Mohammed Ibn Bakhtiyar and completely annihilated the Muslim forces.

History says that the Khasis and Jaintias are the only known tribes from North East India who are of Mon Khmer origin having migrated to the Khasi-Jaintia Hills, in Meghalaya, from Cambodia.
Also, it is interesting to note that during the Khmer traditional wedding ceremony or ritual, when everything is all said and done, the groom himself is MADE to follow the lead of the Khmer bride.
