Nearly five lakh people in Jajpur district of Orissa were affected by floods as swollen Brahmani and Baitarani rivers inundated many areas with the death toll in the calamity mounting to five.
A 50-year old man was swept away in Jajpur by swirling flood waters of Baitarani, while the body of an eight-year-old boy was recovered from Khula maidan near the district headquarters town, the sources said.
Jajpur district bore the brunt of the calamities with a population of 4,89,063 in 573 villages spread across 123 gram panchayats marooned while 63,336 hectares of paddy land had been submerged and over 800 kutcha houses damaged, the sources said.

Foreign and Indian private steel companies are setting up huge steel mills in the mineral-rich states of Orissa, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, but villagers in these areas complain they are not adequately compensated for their land.
