Jakarta Riots of May 1998 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jakarta Riots of May 1998 were riots that occurred in several parts of Indonesia, notably Jakarta and Surakarta during May 1998.
The rioting started after four ethnic Chinese students from Trisakti University were shot dead during a demonstration on 12 May 1998.
The riots became more wide-spread on 14-15 May 1998 and quickly turned into a pogrom targeting properties and businesses owned by ethnic-Chinese (Indonesian Chinese), who were made into scapegoats.

Jakarta was the center of the Dutch effort to retain control over their former colony during the war of independence that ended with the establishment of Indonesia in 1949.
Officially, Jakarta is not a city but a province with special status as the capital of Indonesia and is hence headed by a governor instead of a mayor.
Jakarta, as a province, is divided into five cities (kota) (formerly municipalities (kotamadya)) each headed by a mayor (walikota) and one regency headed by a regent (bupati).

Race riot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A race riot or racial riot is an outbreak of violent civil unrest in which race is a key factor.
Such riots often reflect anger among racial minority groups that are regarded as socio-economically deprived, and often such anger is directed at law enforcement agencies who are perceived to unfairly target these racial groups.
Racial profiling, police brutality, institutional racism, urban renewal, and racial identity politics are often cited as causes of these riots, although many have argued that these riots tend not to follow any sort of political logic but rather represent spontaneous violent outbursts.

Suharto appointed a new cabinet in March 1998, which was dominated by a combination of economic nationalists and cronies, including his daughter as welfare minister, and his golfing partner as trade and industry minister.
The riots, considered the worst since the beginning of the Asian economic crisis in 1997, were not confined to a university campus, but spilt on to the streets and became dominated by ordinary working-class Indonesians.
The riots were reported to be between Muslims and Christians, and brought the number of victims of religious killings in the archipelago in 1999 up to 1,500.

ESRI News - Fall 2001 ArcNews -- The May 1998 Riot in Jakarta, Indonesia, Analyzed with GIS
In May 1998 there was a riot in Jakarta, Indonesia, in which about 1,500 people died and 4,000 buildings were damaged, burned, or totally destroyed.
To see the connection of the riot to ethnic, economic, and political aspects, the point map was then superimposed with polygon data from the Indonesian Bureau of Statistics (BPS) that included such data as the distribution of Islamic and Buddhist populations and the commercial activities in villages.
In the May 1998 riot, however, there were several disturbances at the same time in several areas, from which a degree of intention is extrapolated.

By 1998, his son in Law, Prabowo, was in charge of Kopassus, the same position Soeharto himself had in 1965.
Thus we have the motive for the organised riots in mid-May. The first of the last dominoes falling in the sequence leading to the riots, murders and rapes was the lifting of fuel prices to meet IMF conditions (about six months late).
This was a time of riots, but the riots were localised and involved minor damage, although this period of rioting was at the time described as the worst in 20 years.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- Indonesian fishermen burned a shrimp warehouse Saturday morning in a second day of rioting against ethnic Chinese in a coastal town, newspapers reported.
Indonesia's ethnic Chinese were a particular target of the riots in Jakarta May 13 and 14, but most of the dead were looters burned to death in dozens of shopping malls in the city which were set on fire during the violence.
No one was reported injured in the latest rioting, which began Friday when thousands of fishermen complaining of exploitation burned at least 10 trawlers moored in a port near the town, The Jakarta Post reported.

To describe briefly the context of this article: the rapes occurred in the midst of the riots in Jakarta in May 1998, preceded by Indonesia's economic crisis beginning in mid-1997.
He comments that the context of the May 1998 rapes, in contrast, was distinguished by the absence of these goals and rewards and he hesitantly uses the term of 'political rapes'.
The indications that the riots and rapes could have been planned and instigated by people outside the local community were ignored in favour of a position that preferred to emphasise an oppositional relationship between ethnic Chinese and non-Chinese.

Riots have arisen over poor working or living conditions, government oppression, efforts at taxation or conscription, conflicts between races or religions, or even the outcome of a sporting event or as protest against perceived cultural colonialism.
Riots are characterized by violence, such as property damage, arson, looting, assault and murder.

There were further riots by immigrant and minority populations in East London during the 1930s, Notting Hill in the 1950s, and Brixton, and Blackbird Leys, Oxford in the 1980s.
These riots have followed cases of perceived racism - either the public displays of racist sentiment (including crimes against members of ethnic minorities which were subsequently ignored by the authorities), or, as in the Brixton riots, racial profiling and alleged harassment by the police force.
