Daubert was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, and began working as a coal miner at age 11.
Daubert was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1966.

At age eleven, Jake joined his father and brothers in the mines, working part-time as a breaker boy by removing pieces of slate from slow-moving streams of ore. Jake's mother died the following year, and soon afterwards he quit school for full-time mine work.
Jake even ran for Brooklyn alderman once, and would have won had he taken seriously the campaign.
