Zero Effect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zero Effect is a 1998 film directed by Jake Kasdan (son of famed Hollywood writer/director Lawrence Kasdan) starring Bill Pullman as 'the world's most private detective' Daryl Zero and Ben Stiller as his assistant Steve Arlo.
Written by Jake Kasdan, the film is to some extent inspired by A Scandal in Bohemia by Arthur Conan Doyle.
In October of 2001, Entertainment Weekly reported that Kasdan was attempting to resurrect the character of Daryl Zero for television.

 `Effect'-ive debut for new Kasdan
JAKE Kasdan is the co-producer, writer and director of Zero Effect.
Zero Effect is confident, if for no other reason than this: Jake Kasdan doesn't seem to share many of his age peers' conviction that today's average moviegoer demands 28 frames of content for every 24 frames of film.
Kasdan backloads a lot of exposition, resorting to flashback to explain clues that he has withheld.

Jake's rousing debut is a cut above the rest, a refreshingly funny and inviting detective story that never walks the straight and narrow.
Kasdan has filled the film with vividly drawn characters and smart dialogue, so you honestly care what they say and do.
I truly admire Lawrence Kasdan, and I was very interested to hear what his off-spring had to say about his first major league effort.

Instead of leading his cinematic soldiers into battle, Kasdan merely slouches in the back row this time, lobbing juvenile jokes with all the conviction of a director paying his dues for the chance to do something he enjoys next time out.
Kasdan also makes a wise choice by letting co-star Jack Black ("Shallow Hal") just do whatever it is that pleases him.
Though Hanks can hardly be blamed when Kasdan and White given him very little to do, he nevertheless makes a strong impression that another 5 years of supporting work is necessary before he takes another lead role.

Kasdan bounced back with the romantic comedy French Kiss (1995), starring Meg Ryan as a woman who wants to get her straying fiancé back at any cost, even if it means having to follow him to France.
Kasdan decided to try his hand at stage directing in the fall of 1995 with John Patrick Shanley’s Four Dogs & a Bone at the Geffen Playhouse, but he later returned to the big screen with the comedy Mumford (1999).
Kasdan’s son, Jake Kasdan, has followed in his father’s footsteps, starting off as an actor in his father’s films The Big Chill, Silverado and The Accidental Tourist, then moving on to direct TV series such as Freaks and Geeks and Grosse Pointe, as well as the feature film Orange County (2002).

Kasdan may not know how to lessen the impact of the film's ready-made clichés (remember: if you open a college letter with excessive glee on your face, prepare to be rejected) but White's jokes are genuinely cutting especially when boredom and drugs give way to slippery sexuality.
His work for Jake Kasdan's Orange County is very much on the dry side though it's certainly not bad by any means.
Kasdan and White tried to make Orange County as subversive as possible despite resistance from the studio heads and this conflict is equally the film's strongest and weakest attribute.

Rather than make his name writing splashy blockbusters akin to his father Lawrence Kasdan's breakthrough script for The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Jake Kasdan earned his prodigy stripes with the sly, low-budget film Zero Effect (1998) and his astute direction on several acclaimed TV series.
Kasdan also helped give an extra insider edge to the witty teen soap spoof Grosse Pointe (2000), but it too failed to last beyond one TV season.
Kasdan's proven ability with smart, teen-based comedy, though, earned him the directing job for Orange County (2002).

Kasdan is so thoroughly ironic in a postmodern, L.A. way that Zero's past triumphs include "the case of the man with mismatched shoelaces" and "the case of the hired gun who made too many mistakes."
The otherwise dysfunctional Zero is so instinctual, Kasdan would have us believe, that he merely needs to turn on his twisted mental apparatus to pick up a trail of murder, flmail and betrayal.

Zero is perhaps the world's greatest private detective, solving many a case without even setting foot outside of his well-secured penthouse apartment.
This is not to say that Zero Effect degenerates into something sappy and touchy-feely; the power of the relationship and its effects on Zero and Gloria derives from its subtle execution.
Zero Effect is not a perfect debut for Kasdan (son of Lawrence); in addition to the by-the-numbers mystery, there is also a weak subplot revolving around the strain Arlo's work puts on his relationship with his girlfriend (Angela Featherstone).

The curious will be drawn by the pedigree of the cast and crew—star Colin Hanks is Tom's son, Schuyler Fisk is the daughter of Sissy Spacek, and Jake Kasdan shares the directorial enthusiasm of his father Lawrence—but what got me excited was the promise of another great script by Mike White.
He has obvious affection for his characters (not even Jack Black's spastic druggie is treated with contempt), which adds depth and warmth to the film, and to a genre often populated by characters who are little more that objects of ridicule.
Kasdan has the same flair for understatement as his father, and his style is a perfect match with White's script—he never overplays a joke or stretches a punch line, and he allows his actors to develop as characters rather than to simply rush to the next sight gag or witticism.

Four judicious cuts can be found in the "Deleted Scenes" and director Jake Kasdan and writer Mike White provide a "Commentary." Description: Director Jake Kasdan's shaggy, haphazard teen comedy scores points for its likable (if miscast) leads and some inspired comic situations, but it's hard to think of the film as anything more than a missed opportunity.
Kasdan shoves the film along at a sprightly pace, but the economy comes at a price: The quick cutting and frequent close-ups rob County of its atmosphere and style, and most every role feels like an extended cameo.
