  Elvis Costello Chords
A copy of these tapes made its way to Jake Riviera, one of the heads of the fledgling independent record label Stiff.
Riviera signed Costello to Stiff as a solo artist in 1977; the singer/songwriter adopted the name Elvis Costello at this time, taking his first name from Elvis Presley and his last name from his mother's maiden name.
At the end of the year, Jake Riviera split from Stiff Records to form Radar Records, taking Costello and Lowe with him.

Stiff Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Stiff Records record label was created in London in 1976, at the outset of the punk boom by entrepreneurs Dave Robinson and Andrew Jakeman (aka Jake Riviera).
Robinson and Riviera were a fiery management combination, and after a series of disagreements, Riviera left Stiff in early 1978 to form the short-lived Radar Records, taking Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe with him as a settlement package.
Riviera's departure coincided with the end of the 5 Live Stiff's Tour which showcased the talents of emerging artist Ian Dury whose album New Boots and Panties raced up the charts and kept the label in business over the following months.

ELVIS COSTELLO: I fought the law!
The story was going around that a journalist from Sounds had been stuck into a corner of Dingwalls (a club in London where Elvis was appearing) by Jake Riviera, Elvis's manager, and told to wait there for Elvis to join him for an interview.
Fortunately, Jake likes the Trouser Press, so when we asked him for a crack at Elvis, albeit over the phone from 3,000 miles away - hardly the proper circumstances for dragging anything out of a tough interviewee - we weren't left holding the phone.
Jake and Elvis thought it would be a laugh if Elvis went outside and played for the company staffers when they went outside on their lunch break.

 CostelloNews.com: Jake Returns
Maybe the smartest thing rocker Elvis Costello ever did in his long career was fire his manager, Jake Riviera.
Riviera has many enemies in the record business, not the least of which is probably beloved rocker Dave Edmunds.
Lowe and behold, there was Jake Riviera, now white haired, but still looking for a fight, cursing in his Cockney accent, baring widely spaced teeth, looking very much like a rabid pit bull.

 2 Tone Records - I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down - CHS TT7
WEA, who had distributed Radar, were less than delighted: they felt they had a stake in Costello's career by virtue of the success of the records they had distributed for him, and so they obtained a court injunction to stop the 2-Tone single being sold.
By March '80, the situation was clarified: F-Beat was set up by Riviera as an independent company, but WEA continued to distribute their records.
Several months later, Riviera pressed up a few thousand more of the 2-Tone singles, and these were given away at London and US gigs".

In 1976, Clover relocated from Mill Valley, California, to London, England, where the group hooked up with managers/record company executives Jake Riviera and Dave Robinson and signed to PolyGram Records, which, in early 1977, released this, their third album.
In the UK, the LP appeared on PolyGram's Vertigo label and was called Unavailable; in the US, PolyGram's Mercury label felt that title was a bit uncommercial and opted instead for the generic Clover, which as it happened had already been used for their Fantasy Records debut album in 1970.
In any case, it was apparent that Riviera and Robinson felt that they'd hit upon a more authentic, American version of Brinsley Schwartz -- country-rock with an edge.

Armed with very little money (apparently Jake never cashed the cheque for fifty guineas which Feelgoods’ guitarist Wilko Johnson donated!) and an excellent graphic artist in Barney Bubbles the volatile pairing of Riviera and Robinson set about delivering an eclectic bunch of artistes to a very small public.
Jake Riviera took this lot with him when he left, but they didn't succeed in quite the same way as fellow departees Costello and Lowe.
