Xtratime Community - Yakin back to lift Switzerland
It was just the lift coach Jakob Kuhn needed after seeing his side's progress since qualifying for UEFA EURO 2004™ hampered by loss of form and injuries to key personnel.
Kuhn was at least afforded the luxury of a near full-strength squad to choose from here - but on the evidence of the first 45 minutes there seemed little chance of improvement on consecutive friendly defeats by Morocco and Greece.
Kuhn made four changes at the break and his side responded with increased urgency - the substitutes Mailaim Rama and Johann Lonfat combining well on 46 minutes, with the former crossing for the latter who headed over.

As a player, Kuhn was a skilful midfield performer and spent most of his professional career with FC Zürich, making 500 appearances over 16 years and earning 63 caps.
Kuhn adopts a rather more philosophical attitude to his side's showing, which brought a draw against Croatia and two defeats against England and France.

When Jakob "Koebi" Kuhn took over from Argentine Enzo Trossero at the helm of the Swiss national team, the fortunes of this Helvetic country were at one of their all-time lows.
A former international midfielder with 64 caps to his credit, he was one of the best players of his generation playing at the heart of a gifted FC Zurich side that reached the semi-finals of the European Cup twice, won six Swiss titles and also five domestic Cups.
Following a spell working for his insurance firm, he twice had stints as interim coach at FC Zurich but it was primarily as coach of the youth team where he cut his teeth in coaching.

Kuhn, who celebrated his sixtieth birthday last October in the week that his Switzerland team qualified for Portugal by beating Ireland in Basel, succeeded Enzo Trossero of Argentina (and previously Roy Hodgson) in 2001, thus becoming the first Swiss national to manage the top team since 1989.
Kuhn has become a disciplinarian whose demands have often led to clashes with some of his players, notably Liverpool's Stéphane Henchoz, who rivals Patrick Müller, of Lyon (and perhaps soon Tottenham), for a place alongside the ever-present FC Basel stopper Murat Yakin in central defence.
Kuhn knows that his first task is to ensure that Switzerland overcome Croatia before they even begin to think ahead.

FC Basel defender Murat Yakin opened the scoring for Kuhn’s side eight minutes before the break, and it appeared they were well on their way to clinching a second successive victory to open their qualifying campaign, a result which would have put them a whole six points ahead of Ireland at this early stage.
Such an outcome would have given the Swiss the balance of power going into the Dublin clash, where anything less than an Irish victory would have rendered the remainder of the qualifying campaign an exceedingly difficult proposition.
