Jakob Nielsen Biography | World of Computer Science
Jakob Nielsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1957 where he went to school.
For those wondering whether Nielsen advocates total Web site designs (not just a tacking on of something that seems like a good idea at the time), he also preaches the avoidance of any technology that is less than two years old--he feels it needs this time to penetrate to the majority of users.
Nielsen founded the "discount usability engineering" movement to aid in rapid improvements of the user interface system, one output of which is heuristic evaluation.

Nielsen's famous "heuristics" (guidelines for web usability) are another area that shows that his popularity is more public relations than credit of invention.

Becoming a Usability Professional (Alertbox July 2002)
Usability expertise is mainly an issue of talent and experience rather than theory.
Much of usability work requires pattern matching, which is why it's so dependent on brain power and past experience: Once you observe slight traces of a usability issue in users' behavior, you must deduce the underlying implications for design.
Usability testing is such a powerful method that even if you mess it up, you'll get useful results that will significantly improve the design.

Jakob Nielsen continued his crusade against "evil" by berating the still common errors of designers and content suppliers on the internet.
The conclusions of Usability's Godfather was that Web evolution would soon sort these problems out as their stupidity, laziness and evil would be their own undoing, in his own form of electronic Darwinism, it seems that Nielsen believes, only the usable will survive.

Voting may be one of the most difficult usability challenges because it is a task completed by virtually anyone, it is done infrequently, it is never exactly the same because the actual ballot differs for each election, and privacy requirements make it difficult for voters to seek help in using the voting system.
Usability is important because it provides guidance as to how standards should be met, and can be the link between standards and operational guidelines.
Although several current voting technologies used paged systems, there may be added usability issues because of the addition of navigational elements to the voting interaction, as well as making it more difficult for the voter to see, at a glance, all of the votes.

Usability guru Jakob Nielsen on website accessibility, interview by Sean McManus
Jakob Nielsen is well-known as a usability expert.
I don't think usability testing is really a very expensive cumbersome process but on the other hand when there are issues that are already known about there is no need to do a test to find them out for the 100th time.
That's why I'm advocating a usability approach to accessibility as opposed to a technical approach to accessibility, which I also admit is necessary.

Jakob Nielsen, author of Designing Web Usability and Homepage Usability: 50 Websites Deconstructed, advises companies on how to make their websites, public or internal, more user-friendly.
According to Nielsen, that last point is the key to having a website that works well – "keep it simple" is his website mantra.
If you want to see whether or not they're capable of doing it, which is the usability aspect, you have to have one user at a time sit at the computer and use a website.

The potential pitfalls were amply demonstrated in a recently completed study by Nielsen's consulting firm, Nielsen Norman Group, which observed how ordinary Internet users navigated several dozen cutting-edge Web sites prominently featuring applications designed with Flash MX.
Such usability issues are much more critical with Web applications than desktop software, Nielsen said, because the threshold for frustration is much lower on the Web.
Nielsen credited Macromedia, which hired him as a consultant earlier this year, for taking usability seriously and paying attention to such issues while Flash is still relatively young.
