 GOTOVAC
It's a delightful folksy dance by Jakov Gotovac who during his lifetime (1895-1982) was one of Croatia's best known composers who also conducted choruses and orchestras in Yugoslavia.
His best music is found in works he wrote for what the CD notes call "little people," the natives of the countryside, expressing rather basic moods, emotions and activities.
Gotovac's Symphonic Kolo, his treatment of three of these dances, dates from 1926 and was the composer's first orchestral work.

 Jakov Gotovac - Wikipedia

 Gotovac (was Re: Schwanda)
This is a wonderful recording; Gotovac shows to be an excellent conductor and the playing of the orchestra is very good.
As far as the music, this is the typical folk opera, closer perhaps to Dvorak's "Jakobin" then to Schwanda - certainly the orchestra is not as proeminent as in Schwanda (by that I mean the large number of pure orchestral interludes that one finds in Schwanda; the orchestration in Ero is certainly luxurious).
The only Gotovac CD that I am aware of is on the CPO label with the NDR Hannover orchestra under Moshe Atzmon.

In the thirties, opera turned back to the national, this time however with changed attributes, attempting to artistically integrate elements of folklore and leaning upon comic opera features.
The most prominent representatives of this tendency were Krsto Odak with the opera Dorica pleše / Doris Dances/ (1934) and Jakov Gotovac, whose opera Ero s onoga svijeta /Ero the Joker/ (1935) became the most frequently played Croatian music-and stage work.
In the fifties, the Croatian opera scene was marked by the powerful realistic musical drama Ekvinocij /The Equinox/ (based on Ivo Vojnović), and in the sixties by Stjepan Šulek's neo-classic operas Koriolan (Koriolan) and Oluja (The Tempest), both of them based on Shakespeare's plays.

In order to keep reviving the works of Croatian heritage, we are presenting the première of the funny opera Ero the Joker by Jakov Gotovac, one of the best opera works not only among Croatian opera production, but in the Slavic one as well.
Repertoire of CNT Opera will therefore include three works by domestic authors, each descending from the Mediterranean setting: Jakov Gotovac with his above mentioned opera, Ivo Tijardović with Little Floramy and Frane Parać with Judith.
On the other hand, we would like to enrich the repertoire based on the world musical literature, giving première of the most beautiful melodrama of Italian verism, Tosca by Giacomo Puccini.
