Jalgaon is an important center for cotton-textile and vegetable-oil mills, particularly groundnut-oil and hydrogenation plants.
It is bounded by Madhya Pradesh state on the north, and by the districts of Buldhana to the east, Jalna on the southeast, Aurangabad on the south, Nashik on the southwest, and Dhule on the west.
Jalgaon located in the northwest region of Maharashtra State is an agrarian city, which lies north of Nasik (also spelt as Nashik), bounded in the north by Satpuda range, in South by Ajanta range, in the west by Dhulia district and in the East by Buldhana district.

It was conquered by the Marathas in the early eighteenth century, and ruled by the Maratha Peshwas until their defeat in the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818, when Khandesh, along with most of the Peshwa's dominions, became part of Bombay province of the British Raj.
East Khandesh, headquartered at Jalgaon, had an area of 4544 mi², and a population of 957,728 in 1901, and West Khandesh, headquartered at Dhulia (Dhule) had an area of 5497 mi² and a population of 469,654 in 1901.
East Khandesh became Jalgaon district, and West Khandesh was divided into the districts of Dhule and Nandurbar.
