Police suspected that the bombs were meant to explode at the New Jalpaiguri railway station, from where many people were likely to have boarded the coach in which the explosion occurred.

Kamakhya-Guri, in the restive district of Jalpaiguri, is about 600km north of Kolkata, previously known as Calcutta.
Police officials from Jalpaiguri said the bomb, planted under a public bench, was so powerful that it blew off a portion of the station's ceiling.

Speaking to The Hindu from Jalpaiguri today, the Superintendent of Police, S.N. Gupta, said that seven persons have been detained in connection with the incident in which six persons on two motorcycles indiscriminately opened fire on a group of people gathered outside two shops.
Gupta added that at least 27 hardcore KLO militants continued to be at large and most of them, including the chief of the outfit, Jiban Singha, and some of his close associates, were suspected to be hiding in Bangladesh.
Only a few weeks ago two companies of paramilitary forces had been transferred from the trouble-prone areas of north Bengal to the south-western naxalite-affected districts of the State after it was believed that the KLO had largely been accounted for.

State police and the Jalpaiguri district administration not only failed in their constitutional duty to keep the court open from 15 December, but also did not submit the full facts of the matter to the Calcutta High Court despite repeated reminders, the ruling said.
Mr Vohra, director general of West Bengal police, and three district officials in Jalpaiguri were guilty of criminal contempt that merited six month's imprisonment, the judges said.
