Topic: Jalsaghar

Jalsaghar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jalsaghar (1958), known in the U.S. and Europe as The Music Room, is the 4th feature film directed by Satyajit Ray.
Based on a short story by Bengali writer Tarasankar Banerjee, the film is a detailed dramatic study of the last days of a zamindar - a semi-feudal landlord in Bengal.
Told with a detail and sense of empathy that typified Ray's films, Jalsaghar drew high praise internationally (Bosley Crowther in The New York Times, Derek Malcom in The Guardian), and is discussed in the second volume of Roger Ebert's Great Movies as a landmark film in global cinema.

Jalsaghar opens to the shot of a large, ornate, candlelit chandelier, precariously swaying from the momentum of its cumbersome weight.
It is a vestige of the fading grandeur of Huzur Biswambhar Roy's (Chhabi Biswas) cherished jalsaghar - the elegant entertainment room where guests listen to the performance of traditional musicians amid eroded columns and peeling plaster.
Inevitably, Roy is left alone to savor the intoxicating oblivion of his Phyrric victory, only to be sobered by the emergence of a spider from his portrait.

Jalsaghar was made between the second and third films of the "Apu Trilogy" and serves as a powerful counterpoint.
Whereas the films of the trilogy dealt with poverty and the struggling lower class in India, Jalsaghar examined life in the India of the 1930's at the other end of the social spectrum: the Bengali landed gentry (called "zamindar"), the nouveau riche, and the conflict between the two.
Jalsaghar is in Bengali with English subtitles and has a running time of 95 minutes.

In Jalsaghar, director Satyajit Ray examines the age-old conflict between the landed nobility and the unpedigreed rich, between those who dwell in the past and those who embrace the future.
After spending two films (Pather Panchali, Aparajito) providing an intimate perspective of the struggles of a poverty-stricken family, Ray moved to the other end of the social spectrum, to those who lived in palaces, commanded legions of servants, and threw lavish parties.
To indulge his passion for music, he had a jalsaghar, or music room, constructed within his palace where he could hold large parties and enjoy the singing, playing, and dancing of paid performers.

JALSAGHAR (THE MUSIC ROOM), showing this year as part of the Berlinale Production Design Retrospective, is the fourth of Satyajit Ray’s films, made after his more famous Apu trilogy.
Released in 1960, it was generally criticised in India as being too conservative amongst the radical wave of the sixties.
In JALSAGHAR, he takes his time to reveal the character of Roy, and he creates a very solid sense of an order, a way that things should be — not just in terms of caste and custom, but in the larger sense of living, and nature.

Manas: Culture, Indian Cinema- Satyajit Ray
The latter two movies trace the life of a young man [Apu] in Calcutta, his early marriage to a village girl, his conflict with his father, and their final reconciliation.
In Devi, an elderly man has a vision that his young daughter-in-law is a goddess, and she is compelled to bear the burden of divinity; when her husband returns home from a trip, he finds his wife installed as a deity.
On the other hand, films such as Jalsaghar, with its seemingly loving portrait of a zamindar who was the last specimen of a noble class of people who lived for music and displayed a refined aesthetic sensibility, seemed utterly reactionary.

One of the least seen of these, Jalsaghar (1958), examines the twilight years of a spoiled, aging aristocrat (Chhabi Biswas).
Presiding over a decaying mansion and a dwindling fortune, this childish Bengali zamindar, or feudal landlord, spends much of his time slumped on an unroyal throne, lazily sucking smoke from a hookah as if it were a teething ring.
Jalsaghar's "Rosebud" is revealed in the film's first and last shots of a cobwebbed chandelier--Ray's symbol of antiquated opulence.

The theme of change, of the countervailing gains and losses attendant on the forces of progress, has often been identified as the central preoccupation of Ray's work.
Jalsaghar is the story of Biswambhar, a feudal lord who ruins himself through holding music concerts to outclass the boorish upstart son of a moneylender.

Based on a story by Bengali writer Tarasankar Banerjee and opening today, ``Jalsaghar'' unfolds like an ancient fable or proverb, illustrating with extraordinary power the downfall of Biswambhar Roy, an aging zamindar (feudal landlord) who holds on to his palatial estate even when he's drowning in debt.
Pawning the last of his jewels, he hosts a grand party in his beloved jalsaghar (music room), invites his neighbor and then upstages him with an extravagant gesture by handing his last gold coins to one of the entertainers.
Ray had a gift for telling stories through such visual images, and the last moments of ``Jalsaghar,'' consequently, are the most powerful, When a servant opens the heavy curtains and lets in the first rays of sunlight, the old fool mounts his white horse and gallops, against all warnings, to his conclusion.

Manas: History and Politics, British India, "Chess Players" by Vinay Lal
Ray's films usually entailed a not inconsiderable amount of historical and sociological research; his meticulous attention to detail is indubitably one of the most characteristic trademarks of his films.
More significantly, films such as Devi and Jalsaghar were to provide a novel cinematic experience of the passions, ambience, and texture of Bengali culture, and these cinematic forays into terrain that only Bengali novelists before him had charted established Ray's reputation as a film-maker with an extraordinarily nuanced sensibility.
Though the setting inThe Chess Players was to be mid-nineteenth century Lucknow, the film nonetheless seems to belong with such films as Jalsaghar with their marked Bengali sensibility.

DVDBeaver - Satyajit Ray's "Jalsaghar" Graphic Review by Gary W. Tooze
Typical of the styling of cinema he created, he kept them unceremoniously out of view under his bed, aware of the lavish presentation they would make displayed out in the more public rooms of his Calcutta home.
This noble air of subtlety is also apparent in his film-making with Jalsaghar (The Music Room) being a perfect example.
Criticized for the lack of Indian cultural acceptance of his films, Ray purposely included a few musical numbers in Jalsaghar, although totally different from the Bollywood style cinema that is so popular with his countrymen.

Another is Charulata, a study of middle-class relationships and disappointed love that is as memorable as the tribulations of the peasant Apu.
But the film I would select above both is 1958's Jalsaghar, or The Music Room, which proves beyond doubt that this writer, composer, illustrator and film-maker, who was sometimes accused of being more Western than Indian, was no such thing.
Though influenced by Jean Renoir, whom he aided with his Indian film The River, and bowled over as a young man by De Sica's Bicycle Thieves, Ray owed his chief debt to Rabindranath Tagore, the Indian poet, writer and philosopher with whom he studied as a teenager.
