Jaluit Atoll in the Marshalls: The American Flag was raised over the Japanese Capitol of the Marshall Islands this afternoon within a few hours after it's garrison of 2,000 men surrendered unconditonally to the United States.
The Atoll, which was neutralized when Naval Forces occupied Kwajalein, Eniwetok and Majuro in the Marshalls, bares stark evidence to the intermittent air and sea bombardment it has undergone for the past year and ahalf.
Jaluit is the second prewar held Jap territory in the Marshalls to surrender unconditionally.

Twenty-two of the atolls and four of the islands are inhabited.
The atolls are scattered in an archipelago consisting of two roughly parallel islands chains- the Western Ralik (sunset) and Eastern Ratak (sunrise) chains.
The Jaluit Atoll Conservation Area was established in 1999 under the Republic of Marshall Islands Environmental Protection Agency, in association with the South Pacific Biodiversity Conservation Programme (SPBCP), funded by the Global Environment Facility and executed by SPREP.

The atoll has a total land area of 4.4 square miles (11.4 square km) and a lagoon that is easily accessible and provides a good anchorage.
Atolls consist of ribbons of reef that may not always be circular but whose broad configuration is a closed shape up to dozens of kilometres across, enclosing a lagoon that may be approximately 50 m (160 feet) deep or more.
Discovered in 1798 by an American, Edmund Fanning, the atoll is composed of several islets, with a total area of 13 square miles (35 square km), that surround a lagoon 32 miles (51 km) in circumference.

 The CASO Network, SPBCP
Jaluit Atoll Marine Protected Area in the Marshall Islands has received new funding of 45,000 euros ($47,500 USD) with assistance from the International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN).
Jaluit, with support from SPREP-ICRAN, has engaged consultants to develop a resource management plan for the atoll following a comprehensive baseline assessment of the marine resources in the lagoon in 2001.
Jaluit MPA is steered by a conservation area coordinating committee that has the atoll mayor as chairman and senior traditional leaders in the island council as members, along with John Bungitak, the General Manager of the Environmental Protection Authority in the Marshall Islands.

Bikini Atoll is one of the 29 atolls and five islands that compose the Marshall Islands.
These atolls of the Marshalls are scattered over 357,000 square miles of a lonely part of the world located north of the equator in the Pacific Ocean.
The islands of Rongerik Atoll were uninhabited because, traditionally, the Marshallese people considered them to be unlivable due to their size (Rongerik is 1/6 the size of Bikini Atoll) and because they had an inadequate water and food supply.

The diver, Matthew D. Harris, was lead to the TBD by local fishermen, about six miles out from Imeji on the western side of the atoll.
TBDs were flown by the United States Navy Torpedo Squadrons from the beginning of the Pacific War on December 7, 1941 through the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
The waters of Jaluit atoll are now 'home' to a number of aircraft, including an almost perfect example of a Douglas "Devastator.
