Battle of Ain Jalut - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of Ain Jalut (or Ayn Jalut, in Arabic: عين جالوت, the "Eye of Goliath or the "Spring of Goliath") took place on September 3, 1260 between the Mamluks and the Mongols in Palestine.
Many historians argue that this defeat, and the subsequent defeats by the Japanese of invading Mongols, marked the beginning of the end of the Mongol Empire, though parts of it would last another 250 years.
But Ain Jalut and the defeats near Iki Island by the Japanese marked the end of the aura of Mongol invincibilty.

Talk:Battle of Ain Jalut - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ain Jalut is generally agreed to be the turning point where the Mongol Empire began to fall apart.
At dawn on 3 September 1260 he crossed the river Jordan and rode ten miles along the Plain of Esdraelon between the mountains of Gilboa and the hills of Galilee, into the valley where David slew Goliath.
You are right that Ain Jalut (a better translation than the one in the article is "spring of Goliath" is one of the great turning points of history, and right again that the west does not wish to admit this.

 Ain jalut statue Ain jalut
The Battle of Ain Jalut (or Ayn Jalut, the "Spring of Goliath") took place on September 3, 1260 between the Mameluks and the Mongols in Palestine.
This battle is considered by many historians to be of great macrohistorical importance, as it marked the highwater of Mongol conquests, and the first time they had been decisively defeated.
They finally met at Ain Jalut on September 3, with both sides numbering about 20 000 men (the Mongol force was originally much larger, but Hulegu took most of it when he returned home).

 History Decided At The
The English-language version of the Arabic name is Wadi Ain Jalut, the 'Spring Of Goliath', and it was here that, in the 13th century AD, both Arab and European civilization were spared from the most perilous threat to face either one…..EVER.
The very name 'Spring Of Goliath' comes from the belief that it was the site of the famous battle between the Jewish shepherd David and the Philistine warrior Goliath- a story that, it should be noted, is as renowned in Islam as it is in Christianity and Judaism.
It was then that the Muslims of the Middle East, a fractured lot of autonomous city-states that had barely been able to show enough unity to stem the incursions of the 'Franj' (Crusaders) from Europe, found themselves face-to-face with a foe infinitely more dangerous, a foe whose very name evoked terror: the Mongols.

 StrategyPage.com - Military Book Reviews
The battle that followed was epochal, not in the way it was fought, but in the outcome and the ripples it sent through the world and the shaping of its history.
The clash of Mongol and Mamluk at Ain Jalut was one of the most significant battles in world history, yet it is a rare Western history class that even hears mention of it, even though it was as important for Western civilization as those fought at Marathon, Salamis, Lepanto, Chalons and Tours.
Their belief in themselves was never quite the same and Ain Jalut marked the end of any concerted campaign by the Mongols in the Levant.

Sources of the Qur'an: Saul, Gideon, David and Goliath
One last small detail is that Muhammad mistook Jalut for the Philistine military commander when speaking of "Jalut and his forces".
But a close reading of 1 Samuel 17 shows that Goliath was the best fighter of the Philistines being called "their hero" or "their champion" but neither the king nor a general in command of the Philistine army.
Maybe another reason is that Muhammad correctly remembered that Saul was very tall (1 Samuel 10:21-24), and hence he is called Talut under the influence of the Arabic word taala (to be long/tall) as suggested in Paret's commentary on the Qur'an.
