Jam   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Jam is a type of fruit preserve: it is a way of preserving fruit by boiling it with sugar.
Making jam at home used to be common, but the practice is declining, and the accessories, particularly the cellophane covers for jam jars, are getting hard to find in some locations.
Jam is often used on bread, and also in yoghurt to sweeten it.

Science and its children, technology and engineering, have had for over two hundred years a relatively unbroken string of triumphs.
At the level of normal science, such a logical structure is indeed hermetic: impervious to falsification and incapable of self-transcendence.
What at one level (the level of normal science) is seen as a process of continual challenge and revision, at another level (the paradigmatic level) is seen as a hermetic process of self-perpetuation.

Science fiction is an incubator for imaginative minds to create visions that help us to glimpse not only the future, but also something about ourselves in the present.
The science fiction of the 20th century, he argues, not only created the concept of the robot but demonstrated the complexity of the threats, opportunities and moral dilemmas their arrival would spark.
Science fiction, a term coined in the 1930s to distinguish the genre from the pulp fiction then becoming popular, carried on examining human morality by placing its characters into situations where some limiting problem had been overcome, such as time travel.

For normal grape jam (or grape juice) some of the flavenoids have their molecules in a form that appears blue and others appear red.
When we add vinegar (acid) we introduce more hydrogen ions and they react with the flavenoids that are in a blue form (the reaction is called protonation) and all of these pigment molecules take on a red form and the whole solution appears red.

Neuronal 'Traffic Jam' Marks Early Alzheimer’s Disease
Early Alzheimer's disease may be precipitated by a “traffic jam” within neurons that causes swelling and prevents proper transport of proteins and structures in the cells, according to new studies by Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers.
In mouse models of Alzheimer's disease and in human brain samples from people with the disease, researchers observed a characteristic breakdown in neurons that appears to prevent the normal movement of critical proteins to the communications centers of the nerve cells.
In a vicious cycle, the traffic jam also could increase production of an abnormal protein that clogs neurons, leading to their failure and eventual death.

To teach intelligent design as science in public schools is a clear violation of the principle of separation of church and state.
Before installing intelligent design in the already jam-packed science curriculum, school boards and citizens need to be aware that it is not a recognized field of science.
Every time this debate arises in a public forum, it only wins over open-minded intelligent individuals over to the side of scientific thinking, and educates these people as to why it is so important to be ever-vigilant in protecting the separation of church and state.

CANOE -- JAM! Video: 'Apollo 13' avoids Hollywood's 'bad science'
There are rare exceptions to the bad science rule, Dodge tells the Sun in a free-wheeling conversation about his love of astronomy, space, the history of flight and the few good space films he can watch without the scientist in him cringing.
What also galls him when Hollywood turns science into bogus fiction, Dodge says, is what he calls the "disheartening" fact that space science is being reduced or dropped from the education system in Canada.
Another great example of science stupidity is having a space rock hurtle to Earth and land in a ball of flames, often lighting a forest fire or being found, scorching hot to the touch.
