Jamaica Avenue was an ancient trail for tribes from as far away as the Ohio River and the Great Lakes, coming to trade skins and furs for wampum.
Colonial Jamaica had a band of 56 Minute Men that played an active part in the Battle of Long Island, whose unfortunate outcome led to occupation by British troops during most of the Revolution.
In 1898 Queens, of which Jamaica was the county seat, became part of the City of New York.

The line features the oldest structure still in use in the subway with the S curve in the section from Alabama to Cypress Hills.
After 121 Street, the line leaves Jamaica Avenue and reenters the subway via the new Archer Avenue tunnel (shared with the IND Queens Boulevard Line) to Jamaica Center.
On Archer Avenue, the Broadway line uses the lower level which extends past the Jamaica Center Station and was to be a new line to southeast Queens.

It was voted, that it was deemed expedient to have a railroad between Jamaica and Brooklyn.
On April 25, 1832, the Brooklyn and Jamaica Railroad Company was incorporated for the term of 45 years, with a capital of 300,000 dollars, to purchase the stock of the Turnpike Company at 26 dollars a share in cash or 23 dollars in stock of the new company.
A road was constructed from the house of Charles McNeill at Grand St. Jamaica, along the line of present Jamaica Avenue to the present Hempstead Turnpike, along the line of that road, to the house of Isaac Clowes in the Town of Hempstead, about ten miles in all.

 Long Island Railroad History Page  - The Dunton Archive
The line of this road was located from the Bridge street station, in the village o£ Flushing, to Woodside, on the line of the Long Island Railroad, the intention being to have a through line from Hunter's Point to Flushing over this route.
The location of this line was south of the present line from Jamaica to Springfield, and the station in Jamaica was at a point a little south of the present Long Island Railroad station in Jamaica.
The line conveyed by this deed extended from the junction of that road with the main line at Floral Park eastwardly to Farmingdale and Bethpage, together with the branch from Garden City to Hempstead.

The part of the current Main Line from Jamaica to Greenport was the first actually built by the LIRR, in 1836-1844.
line pre-dates it by a few years (1834-1836), that line was built by the Brooklyn and Jamaica RR Co. and leased by the LIRR in 1836.
The portion from Jamaica, west through Woodside to Hunter's Point (the area is "Hunter's Point"; the avenue is "Hunterspoint"), was built in 1860, after the City of Brooklyn banned steam engines along Atlantic Ave.

The Jamaica Line is a rapid transit line of the BMT Division of the New York Subway.
The entire operation was leased to the BRT, which described its elevated lines with the capital letter "L" (in common with Chicago, but unlike Manhattan and Boston), and was known as the Broadway L. This portion of the Jamaica Line includes a variety of structures.
From its accession by the BRT to and beyond city ownership in 1940, the portion of the line from its western terminus to Cypress Hills was known as the Broadway L or the Broadway-Brooklyn Line.

Another competitor of the LIRR, the South Side RR of LI, is formed and builds a line from Jamaica to Babylon.
This line ended up being the shortest lived of all the many RR's on Long Island, being abandoned in 1876 (although horse cars were later used until about 1880).
The White Line is abandoned for regular passenger service although it was connected with the Central branch for special trains to serve the Creedmoor Rifle Range.

For two weeks I've had to cab or walk to the N/W Train LIne and be involved with this morning crowd.
I live approximately a 20 minute walk from the train station and they don't have a van or shuttle to pick-up passengars along this line.
