Jamalpur District (dhaka division) with an area of 2031.98 sq km, is bounded by Meghalaya State of India, kurigram and sherpur districts on the north, tangail district on the south, mymensingh and Sherpur districts on the east, jamuna river, bogra, sirajganj and gaibandha districts on the west.
Jamalpur (Town) consists of 12 wards and 80 mahallas.
The municipalities are Jamalpur Sadar, Sarishabari, Melandaha, Madarganj, Islampur and Dewanganj.

 Jamalpur    Workshops
Jamalpur was at a very far distance from the Bengal and Bihar coalfields, which was the most important criterion for selecting the place for locomotive workshop way back in 1860s.
Jamalpur was also the headquarters of East Indian Volunteer Rifles with about 2300 strong personnel and necessary armoury and headquarters staff in Jamalpur.
The Gymkhana at Jamalpur which later became a renowned school of Railway officers was started during this period for the recreational facilities.

Due to generation of a large no of unloadable BOX wagons in Eastern Railway and thus limiting the usage of these wagons it was felt necessary to introduce special type of repair to BOX wagons in between POH to make them earn revenue.
Jamalpur Workshop has the proud privilege of being the only railway workshop in Indian Railways, where broad gauge cranes for railway's use are being manufactured.

The seven upazilas are: Jamalpur Sadar, Melandah, Madarganj, Dewanganj, Bakshiganj and Sarishabari upazila of the Jamalpur district.

The Jamalpur Gymkhana, often referred to as just Gymkhana (or merely Gym) by its members, is primarily a hostel for young apprentice officers of the Indian Railways.
IRIMEE is located at Jamalpur in the Munger (spelled Monghyr, during the British rule of India) district of Bihar, on the Patna - Bhagalpur rail route.
The Jamalpur site was chosen for its proximity both to the Sahibganj loop (which was the main trunk route at the time), and to the communities of gunsmiths and other mechanical craftsmen in Bihar, who were adept in the skills required for a railway workshop.

The scheme was officially launched in February, but even news of its existence has not trickled down to all of those who need it the most.
