| | Groundwater Arsenic Contamination in Bangladesh and West Bengal, India |
 | | Districts in West Bengal are indicated by letters, as follows: A, Maldah; B, Murshidabad; C, Bardhaman; D, Hugli; E, Howrah; F, Nadia; G, North 24-Parganas; H, South 24-Parganas; and I, Calcutta. |
 | | Until last year, we knew that the districts of Jamalpur and Bogra (Figure 1) had groundwater arsenic levels between 10 and 49 µg/L. In our recent survey, we found villages with high arsenic in groundwater in these two districts, and we also found very serious arsenic patients in Ezarapara (Jamalpur District) and Ullipur (Bogra District). |
 | | Although the total population of the 42 districts in Bangladesh and the nine affected districts in West Bengal are approximately 80 million and 42 million, respectively, it does not mean that all of the individuals are drinking arsenic-contaminated water and will suffer from arsenic toxicity. |
