  Movie Villains: Jame Gumb
Starling manages to track down Gumb at his rundown home, but he confuses her by introducing himself as "Jack Gordon." He flees into his basement when Starling realizes who he is, and when she pursues, Starling finds herself inside a real-life horror movie.
Gumb tries to sneak up on her with night vision goggles but gets shot to death by the perky-eared FBI agent.
The last thing Gumb managed to do that endangered the rest of the world, however, was more indirect, as the process of capturing him arguably allowed the escape of Dr. Lecter to occur.

Gumb's modus operandi was to kidnap a woman by approaching her pretending to be injured, asking for help loading something heavy into his van, and then knocking her out in a blitzkrieg attack from behind.
Littman, Bimmel's elderly employer, only to find Gumb himself, calling himself "Jack Gordon." Gumb fled into the basement and stalked her with night vision goggles as she stumbled around in the dark, but she heard him behind her just in time to open fire and kill him.

DVD Verdict Review - The Silence Of The Lambs: Special Edition
Admittedly, the Gumb character is more thinly developed in the film than in the novel, where his psychological motivations (his desire to become his mother—or at least how he defines his mother through pure body) are more clearly developed.
The real key to the Gumb character in the film is revealed when he instructs Catherine Martin—"It rubs the lotion on its skin"—suggesting Gumb's desire to render all subjects (particularly women) as objects.
The irony is that Starling objectifies Catherine Martin as well, in her case as the fulfillment of her desire to "rescue the lamb" and render justice for her dead father.

The character, Jame Gumb, becomes not only a symbol of the unexplored, silent borderlands of our culture, but in some ways asks us to identity as an audience with some of his neuroses.
Hannibal Lecter is a serial killer character which holds these qualities in a more direct, charismatic way; a character that transfixes the audience with the image of a civilised, intelligent, and rational individual prone to seemingly random, utterly savage outbursts of irrational violence.
The first kind of killer is one that gives voice to the ambiguous, poorly defined conceptual areas of society that are shrouded in fears and anxieties of misunderstanding; the cross-dressing Jame Gumb character gives voice to a wide range of of issues relating to gender and sexuality, specifically the confusion and "hateful mocking" (Harris, p.
