Among them were Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley (1798-1805), William Pitt Amherst (1823-1828), George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland (1836-1842), Edward Law, 1st Earl of Ellenborough (1842-1844), and James Andrew Brown Ramsay, 11th Earl of Dalhousie (1848-1856; also known as the Marquess of Dalhousie).
Later, Dalhousie espoused the "doctrine of lapse" and annexed outright the estates of deceased princes of Satara (1848), Udaipur (1852), Jhansi (1853), Tanjore (1853), Nagpur (1854), and Oudh (1856).
They were the railroads, the telegraph, and the uniform postal service, inaugurated during the tenure of Dalhousie as governor-general.

BROWN, JOHN, D.D. an eminent divine, the son of the subject of the preceding memoir, was born July 12, 1784, at the house of Burnhead, in the parish of Whitburn, Linlithgowshire.
BROWN, THOMAS, an eminent metaphysician, youngest son of the Rev. Samuel Brown, minister of Kirkmabreck, in the stewartry of Kirkcudbright, and of Mary, daughter of John Smith, Esq., Wigton, was born at the manse of that parish, January 9, 1778.
BROWN, WILLIAM LAWRENCE, D.D. an eminent theological writer, the son of the Rev. William Brown, a native of Scotland, minister of the English church at Utrecht, in Holland, was born in that city, January 7, 1755.

Andrew, another son, of the same family, followed the teaching profession, and in 1875, when Rev. George McDougall, the North-west missionary, was on a visit to his friends in Innisfil, Andrew Sibbald accompanied him to the far North-west, where he has been a teacher of the Indians since that time.

James Ramsay of Lambhill in Perthshire, his brother Andrew, his sister Helen and her husband, Andrew Hutson, in Pliverhall, of Drumtuthell, near Dunfermline,were tried by the Court of Dumfermline in February, 1732, for cattle stealing.
James and Andrew Ramsay, after a long and violent resistance, were apprehended within a hut in dean-park, in the barony of Pitfirrane.
As a man of the church, Ramsay was notable for his unsectarlan outlook; he consistently advocated (with eventual success), the removal of the barriers separating the Scottish Episcopalian and English churches, and his theological sympathies lay with the evangelical movement, rather than with the high church.

Ramsay's brother-in-law, the Bishop of Nova Scotia, is here--he preached the annual sermon for the anniversary meeting of the Charity Children in St. Paul's.
Ramsay was appointed Dean of the Diocese of Edinburgh by Bishop Terrot in 1846, after having previously declined, as we saw, the dignity of the Bishopric of New Brunswick, offered him by Sir Robert Peel.

In eight years James Andrew Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie, the Governor-General of India, had annexed a quarter of a million square miles (650,000 km²) of land to the Company\'s territory.
Dalhousie used this doctrine to possess a number of Indian kingdoms, most notably those of Pune, Nagpur and Jhansi, causing the disenfranchised rulers of these kingdoms to join sides with the rebellious Indian troops.
Brown Bess was the standard issue long gun throughout the British army for over a century before finally being phased out in 1838, so that the sepoys were being moved from an obsolete, inaccurate weapon to a modern rifle.

Andrew Lundin, the third of the line of the Lundins of Balgonie, was, from the records of Parliament I have seen, Sheriff of Fife in the 1506, and, for what I see, held the office till the 1519 it was given to the Lord Lindsay.
James who was provided to the lands of Conland, bu he died without issue, and the lands of Conland came to a third brother, Andrew Lundin, the ancestor of Michael Lundin of Drum, by whom the heir male of this ancient family was preserved.

 Lodge Albert - in the beginning!
The election of Office-Bearers was accompanied by the Festival of St. John; the installation, as it is to this day, incorporated the Festival of St. Andrew, and an annual dance and assembly took place from February 1868 onwards.
Large numbers also attended the consecration of Lodge Broughty Castle in 1871, and were at the funeral of the Earl of Dalhousie in 1874.
It was passed that the Festival of St. Andrews be celebrated in a quieter way that year, in view of the serious crisis in which the country was involved.
