Lord Graham, chief of the Clan, had been created Earl of Montrose in 1504 but had died with the rest of the Scottish nobility around their king James IV on Flodden field in 1513.
James Graham’s small force was cut to pieces at Philiphaugh in the Borders and he was forced to flee into exile.

Angus was compelled to resign his office of Lord Justiciar on the south side of the Forth, his Stewardry of Kirkcudbright, his Sheriffdom of Lanark, and his command of the strong castle of Thrieve.
Angus was one of the commanders of the insurgent forces at the battle of Sauchieburn, in which the royal army was defeated, and James was murdered in his flight from the field.
The Duke of Albany was appointed Regent in the room of Margaret on her marriage, and compelled Angus and Margaret to take refuge in England, where she was delivered of a daughter, the Lady Margaret Douglas, afterwards the mother of the unfortunate Darnley.

Among the muniments in the possession of the Duke of Montrose there is a charter by William the Lion, probably of the date of 1175, granting to David de Graham, second son of John, the lands of Kynnabre, Charlton, and Barrow-field, in the county of Forfar, and of the fishing of the Water of Northesk.
Montrose, who was in Menteith, in Stirlingshire, hearing of this movement, with his characteristic promptitude and rapidity hastened along the Braes of Balquhidder, thence down the side of Loch Tay, and through Athole and Angus; he then traversed the Grampian mountains, and effected a junction with Lord Gordon on the Dee.
Montrose was still constantly meditating a descent upon Scotland in favour of the royal cause, and was at the Hague while Prince Charles was in treaty with the leaders of the Covenanting party for a restoration to the Scottish throne, on the principles embodied in the National Covenant.

In the early 1960's I was acquainted with Angus Graham, 7th Duke of Montrose, who was the then Rhodesian Minister of Defence 1965-66.
Lord Graham was a convinced advocate of Government-created money, and as a member of the London-based Economic Research Council, had commissioned the money reformer Edward Holloway to do a survey for the Rhodesian Government in 1962, which had recommended financial independence.
Holloway's recommendations had rubbed off on the Duke, and subsequently on me. There was a great flowering of ideas at that time.
