Well, in the 1870 census of Navarro County listing of the great-great-grandfather James Reagan family (although he died that year and isn't in the list himself), there is a James, age 13, in the household.
They were the right age to have birthed great-great-grandfather James (1820-1870), and more importantly, the James who wrote the letter would've been the grandson of Rezin and great-grandson of Thomas, if in fact he was our James Jr.
