Brooke travelled to Burma with the army of the British East India Company in 1825, was wounded, and sent to England for recovery.
Brooke returned temporarily to England in 1847, where he was given the freedom of the city of London, appointed governor and commander-in-chief of Labuan, British consul-general in Borneo and was created a KCB.
James Brooke was a model for Lord Jim in Joseph Conrad's novel Lord Jim.

James Anson Otho Brooke (died October 29, 1914) was a Scottish (sometimes considered Irish) recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Brooke was a 30-year-old lieutenant in the 2nd Batallion, Gordon Highlanders, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

Vyner Brooke who was 72 years old by 1946 also had no faith in his nephew and heir apparent, the Raja Muda Anthony Brooke, with whom he had frequent problems.

Hoping to see an increase in British influence to counteract that of the Dutch, the Sultan confirmed the Rajah Muda's bequest and James Brooke, at the age of 38, found himself a king in a land that had every evidence of being rich in gold, diamonds, and antimony.
It was also a land rife with piracy and head hunters, and James found himself engaged in full-time battle to control these elements in the savage wilderness he had now made his home.

In 1839, James Brooke (1803-1868) sailed up the Sarawak River to Kuching on his 142-ton schooner Royalist to deliver a letter thanking Pengiran Bendahara Hassim, uncle and regent to the sultan of Brunei, for his help in rescuing some shipwrecked British sailors.
When Brooke died in 1868, Sarawak had grown three fold, headhunting and piracy were curtailed, there was only one European company in the country, and trade, mostly Chinese, was taking root.
Brooke, however, was a poor administrator and financier.
