James Burke (boxer) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Burke (1809-1845) was one of England's earliest Boxing champions.
Byrne had been the Irish champion and Burke was afraid of the hostile crowd he would encounter in Ireland, so O'Rourke went to the United States and from there jeered at Burke's lack of courage.
In response, Burke too went to the United States (in reality, Burke was escaping the stigma of having killed his opponent).

Observer | A question of character
Burke has claimed that in developing Robicheaux he has followed Hemingway's dictum that if you know your characters you write about their psychology and so don't need to worry about their vocational roles or where, geographically, you place them.
Burke is an admirer of Ron Hansen's metaphysical mystery story Mariette in Ecstasy in which it is unclear whether the title character is a fantasist or in league with the devil.
Burke's focus on character and his pleasure in descriptive writing means that his novels, while well-plotted, follow a pace more leisurely than in most mystery fiction.
